interestingly moved from being seen as centres of excess and
manifestations of the unsustainability of modernity towards
representing the hope of a more sustainable future.

While cities do have the potential of signi cant


sustainability gains through smart housing, public
transportnd infrastructure for walking and bicycling, they
are also acentres for high consumption, with ecological
footprints far beyond their geographical boundaries.
Geography is fundamental to the study of tourism, because tourism in geographical in nature.
Tourism occurs in places, it involves movement and activities between places and it is an activity
in which both place characteristics and personal self-identities are formed, through relationships
that are created among places, landscapes and people.

Hanoi, which is known as the capital of Vietnam, plays a strategic role in the development of the
whole country, including Tourism. The diversity of Hanoi geography has greatly helped the city
to fulfill its mission, especially its geographical position contributes a lot to reach the capital’s
tourism development goals. Geographical location can help and ease development and progress
of a tourism destination with the advantages providing competitiveness against other
destinations. The characteristics of a tourism center largely affect tourist expectations and
holiday conceptualization. If the geographical features of an area can match with the correct
tourism type, it can rapidly develop the area as an international tourist destination. As part of
geography, the distance and accessibility are also important factors shaping the cost structure and
tourist preferences in tourism. Therefore, this study aims to enlighten the role played by
geographical position in tourism destination development of Hanoi and discuss how location can
impact tourism destinations from the perspective of tourism planning. In general, the study also
evaluates the relation between geography and tourism development, focusing on Hanoi
associated with geographical explanations, finds out the potential of Hanoi tourism about its
airway and highway convenience from geographical point of view, and gives recommendation
to improve travel demand to Hanoi.

Tourists have started to discover non-traditional destinations in Turkey due to new


airports and roads put into service. The increasing access from neighboring
countries help development of new tourism destinations in Eastern parts of Turkey.
Ease of visa applications, entrance and exit procedures at customs, increased
mobility possibilities support development of new destinations in economically
less developed regions of Turkey.
In conclusion, it can be said that tourists start to discover Hanoi due to its location
at Southeast Asia and North of Vietnam, which is very convenient for travelling by
airplane and highway transportation, both domestically and internationally. What’s
more, Hanoi tourism products can be diversified by developing infrastructure
(transport-roads, airports, lodging, ...), supporting some domestic tourism
movements with tourists from neighboring countries and foreign countries, and
finally make Hanoi more famous to international tourism markets through the
guaranty of healthy food from some promotional activities. Moreover, organizing
activities with possible regional impacts (between neighboring countries) such as
Food tour or City tour with cultural exchanges and so on will also help attract
more international tourists to our capital.
