Unit number and title Unit 10 - Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
Start date
Deadline
Scenario:
Naxii Reema is a leading architect and materials domain expert with Canopus Maldives Pvt Ltd, Male.
Having successfully completed your probation in interior design and innovation wing you’re now deputed
to assist Reema with her design on low cost, gated community housing projects at Addu City. Kindly help
in answering the following questions for upcoming 34th International Conference on Construction
Materials and Structures to be held during July 29th – Aug 3rd 2018 at Montpellier, France.
P1: Describe the structure (including atomic structure) associated with the given metal, polymer, ceramic,
composite and smart material
Task 1. Use diagrams to illustrate your answers describe the structure (including the atomic structure) of
the following materials.(select one from each material listing given below)
Metal eg plain carbon steel, mild steel, cast iron, stainless steel and heat-resisting steel.
Polymer eg PETE(Polyethylene Terephthalate), HDPE(High-density Polyethylene),PVC(Polyvinyl
Chloride),LDPE(Low-Density Polyethylene) and PS(Polystyrene).
Ceramic eg glass, porcelain, cemented carbide, stone, barium titanate and tile.
Composite eg carbon fibre, glass reinforced plastic (GRP), concrete and particle reinforced.
Smart material eg electro-rheostatic (ER) fluids, magneto-rheostatic (MR) fluids and piezoelectric
crystals.
P2: Classify the given engineering material; either as metals or non-metals according to their properties
Task 2. From following table examples of different materials are listed, select one example from each type
of materials and Classify as either a metal or a non-metal by using their properties. For each material state
which properties most influenced you when coming to a decision?
P3. Describe mechanical, physical, thermal and electrical properties and state one practical application of
each property in an engineering context.
Mechanical
Physical
Thermal
Electrical
Magnetic.
For each category, pick two specific properties, describe them and say why they are of interest to a
design engineer.
From each category pick one specific property and state its application in an engineering context.
