Composites are materials made by combining two materials to achieve properties beyond metals alloys. Smart materials can respond to external stimuli in useful ways. The authors aim to introduce composites and smart materials, explain types of smart materials like shape memory alloys, and discuss applications such as stents along with the merits and demerits.

M.RAMANAN AND H.MOHAMED SALIM SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES KONGU ENGINEERING COLLEGE This is the era of smart technology. People are becoming smart, intelligent and dependent day by day and it is the duty of engineers to make a common man’s life smarter and easier. This duty was bestowed upon them by necessity and now it has been successfully fulfilled by the introduction of smart materials and composites. Composites are materials manufactured by combining any two materials to achieve the unachievable properties of metal alloys and smart materials are materials that has intrinsic or extrinsic capabilities to respond to an external stimulus in a functionally useful manner. The combination of these two materials give rise to smart composites. In this paper, we are going to give introduction about composites and smart materials and explain about various types of smart materials, elaborated on shape memory alloys (SMA), applications of SMA, explanation about stents and it’s breakthroughs and finally, merits and demerits of the application.
