LESSON 10
THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE :
TENSILE TEST FOR CONCRETE

PARAGRAPH 1

Main idea :

For certain aspects of design it is necessary to obtain the measure of the tensile
strength of concrete.

Supporting Details :

This is particularly needed in some of the design aspects of prestressed and partially
prestressed concrete.

PARAGRAPH 2

Main idea :

The modulus of rupture test is carried out on a standard small beam of cross-
section.

Supporting details :

The modulus of rupture varies between 11% and 23% of the compressive strength,
and a value of 15% is commonly assumed when testing is not carried out.

PARAGRAPH 3

Main idea :

The cylinder-splitting test is so-called because a concentrated line load is applied to

the cylindrical spacimen laid on edge.
Supporting details :

Compressive stresses must exist at the top and bottom of the cylinder.

PARAGRAPH 4

Main idea :

The direct tensile strength of the concrete varies between 0.5 and 0.7 fsp.

Supporting idea :

The direct tensile strength determined in this way is somewhat less tha the modulus of
rupture.
