ACADEMIC ESSAY – MID-TERM PROJECT

PROCEDURES

1. Choose a topic related to English Education, for instance, “The advantages

of using songs to teach English,” “Strategies to comprehend academic reading texts.”

2. Design an outline for a five-paragraph essay based on the topic by filling

out the template (see page 2).

3. Find relevant references to support your arguments on the topic and write

the details of each reference by filling out the table (see page 3).

4. Develop the outline into an essay.Insert the references you have chosen

into the essay and list all the references in APA formaton a referencepage at the end of

the essay.

5. Your essay is assessed based on its organization, mechanics (grammar,

vocabulary, punctuation, capitalization), content, and citation.

The Advantage of Using Film to Teach English

INTRODUCTION
Introductory - Explanation that english is the important
Point languages used in various backgrounds.
- Explanation that many ways to teach make
english easily to teach.

Thesis Nowadays english has been recognizes as an international


Statement languages in every country, it means all people in this world have
the same languages to communicate with others using english
language. There are many ways to make english easily to teach, one
of them are using films to teach English.

Topic Films is inproving the ability of student in vocabulary skill.
Sentence 1

Supporting Using subtitle can make student easily know the meaning of
point the films conversation.

Supporting Not only in bahasa, the students are free to choose the
point language of understanding in the film so that they can enrich other
language than Indonesian.

Topic The student will be a good speakers in pronouncing words.

Supporting When they watch the films, they will hear the right
point pronunciation from the actor so they can practice easily.

Supporting They can pause, rewind, fast forward the film at their own
point convenience.

Concluding By using films, the students came to understand the language

The Advantage of Using Film to Teach English

Nowadays, English has been recognized as an international language in every country.


It means that the people who come from different backgrounds of religion, country and
culture have a media to communicate with each other, thats called English. Form that
phenomenon, we can conclude that english provides the widest possible space for us to
become part of the global community of the world.

In this era, the important thing of studying english is very necessary. So, english
language education must be given to the student from elementary school to the highest level
throughout indonesia.

Some people opinions say that learning english is very difficult, so we have to find
ways to use english easily.

As we all know that there are many ways to make english easy. Maybe by using
technology for entertain. For example listening to the english music, reading english novel or
watching english film.

Here i would like to explain some advantage of teaching english with watching english
film.
The advantage of watching english films is improving the ability of students in
vocabulary skill. Based on article i’ve read, english films in Indonesia usually have subtitles
in bahasa. So the student can easily know the meaning of conversation between actor or
actress without open the dictionary. Another reason they can see the meaning in the subtitle
and that will help them to know what the actors said. As the result, the familiar words
category in student’s brain will increase. So that moment can make the teacher easy to teach
too. Other reason is not only in bahasa, sometimes we can change the translation into the
other language, so the student also can enrich the other vocabularies besides indonesian.

The second advantage is the students will be a good speakers in pronuncing words.
When the students watching films or movie, they will hear the right pronunciation of word
from actor or actress. The pronunciation and its like native speaker. After hearing the right
pronunciation, they can easily practice by imitating the spoken of actors or actress whenever
and wherever the places so it will help the student to say the appropiate pronunciation. So
they can improve their ability in pronunciation by theirself. What I really like about learning
a foreign tongue through films is that they can control the pace of their learning. they can
pause, rewind, fast forward or slow down the movie at will to grasp the language at their own
convenience, so they can repeat the pronunciation as they want

The last advantage is improving the ability in listening skills. When watching the
films or movies students usually will hear the actors and actress spoken English in different
style, tone and accent. It means students can be stumped by someone saying the same things,
but with a different accent, or tone. It is the third advantage of watching English films or
movies for students. On English films, students get to hear a huge variety of regional accents,
which after a time, almost automatically raises student’s ability to comprehend language
when it is spoken by someone whose accent is unfamiliar. So with heard about the voice from
the actor in the movie, the student ability can improve by self because they will know the
words and how to pronounce those words. With the result, student will be better in listening
skills.

In this simple ways, by watching english films, students will remember the words
easily because films included an interesting technology that the student can’t avoid that for
going to get something and thus be able to recognize it when it is spoken and probably be
able to use it correctly too. The student knows the words and how to pronounce those words
with correct pronunciation. The student also gets the new vocabulary or expression sentence
from the movie that they watched. It means it can help students in increasing their ability in
vocabulary, pronunciation and listening skills so students will be better in their English
lesson
