Annotated Bibliography

My research project is based on the benefits and dangers of marijuana, and how

legalization impacts Americans. I want to learn about what marijuana does and what really

happens when used. After I am finished with my paper, I want to walk away knowing my opinion

about marijuana and how to bring awareness about it to others. My research questions are,

how is marijuana harmful and/or beneficial to people? And how does legalizing it impact

Americans?

Laura A. Bischoff, of the Columbus Bureau, wrote the article, “Legalizing recreational

marijuana may be back before Ohio voters” for the Dayton Daily News. This article was posted

on May 11, 2018 and addresses the topic of marijuana legalization in Ohio. Legalization was

rejected in 2015 and the amendment proposal was rewritten and is waiting for approval. It now

proposes for adults over 21 to possess, grow, use, purchase, transport, sell, and share

marijuana.

The article was used to bring awareness of the status of marijuana legalization in Ohio.

Because the article was only addressing the facts about the status, it was not biased. The article

is from Dayton Daily News and the writer is well known writer, this information is researched

credibly. I will use this information to understand what marijuana legalization looks like in Ohio.

This will bring awareness to my readers and myself to how this is impacting us as Americans.

Caulkins, Jonathan P., et al. Marijuana Legalization: What Everyone Needs to Know. Oxford

University Press, 2016.

Jonathan P. Caulkins, Mark A.R. Kleiman, Angela Hawken published the book,

“Marijuana Legalization: What Everyone Needs to Know” in 2012. The book discusses whether

or not marijuana should be legalized. The information is not biased by opinion or religion, but is

only facts. The first few chapters starts off by addressing what marijuana is, who is using it, and

its distribution. This provides a clear understanding of the topic before going further into the

topic. The next few chapters are about how regular use and medical use effect people. Lastly,

the rest of the book addresses what legalization will do and what the government will

encounter.

Each of the writers are researchers with RAND Corporation. They have all done research

on marijuana and used their work to write this book. Their purpose is to answer the questions

our communities have about marijuana and marijuana legalization. Because this book is solely

facts, any reader can get something out of it when learning their opinion on the subject. I intend

on doing the same thing with the information, as I will use it to learn my own opinion on the

subject.

“Understanding Marijuana” by Mitchell Earleywine published his book in 2002.

“Understanding Marijuana” fits it its title very well and goes over everything you need to know

to understand marijuana. Every aspect of history, abuse, use and misuse, health effects, medical

use, and treatment are covered in this book.

The writer is a psychology professor at University at Albany. He has done research in

addictive behaviors. While the information in his book is valid, I don’t he speaks for or against

marijuana because the main focus is solely on what marijuana is. I intend on using this

information to understand the basics of marijuana. This will help me show others what

marijuana is to gain a further opinion on legalization.

Kilmer, Beau. “Marijuana Legalization.” RAND Corporation, 2018, www.rand.org/well

being/justice-policy/centers/dprc/marijuana.html.

Researchers at RAND Corporation participated in a series of different research regarding

marijuana and legalization. Topics of marijuana research range from prevention and

interventions, outcomes, criminal justice, markets and prices, and policy and law. Each link

shows the different steps that went into research and what did or didn’t fail.

Funded by the government, RAND Corporation is a reliable organization with real and

reliable information about research. The information from this website will provide facts about

a range of different research topics in years from the 1990’s to 2018. I intend on using this for

the facts portion of my paper.

Staff from the Do it Now foundation put together an article focusing on how marijuana

effects your body in 2007. Different points are made about your body’s response to marijuana

and the different risks to using. Each point brings awareness of what is happening or going to

happen to those who are using.

Do it Now foundation is a drug prevention group. It is apparent that they are speaking

against marijuana, however, the information is substantial. I intend on using the information for

more awareness of the drug’s effects.

research and textbook. This information will help me understand the way marijuana helps

and/or harms our mental state.

Pew Research Center. “Public Views of Marijuana – Legalization, Decriminalization,

Posted in 2014, an article on different statistics from the Pew Research Center cover

different percentages of how marijuana has impacted people and what people think about it.

Some talk about health impact, but most are focused on the political, legalization topics. The

article also talks about how other drugs compare to marijuana and the impact of that.

Pew Research Center uses the information they gather to inform people about all kinds

of social and political issues. This is a verified group and has reliable information. I intend on

using the statistics for fact checks in my paper.
