Teaching Context: ESL students from various countries studying to improve English
speaking skills at UCR Extension Intensive English Program
Student Age: 18-30 years
Skill: Speaking & Writing
Topic: Self-Confidence
Function: Asking questions, asking and giving personal information

RATIONALE

People in other countries may not feel comfortable expressing themselves or speaking highly of
themselves because of various reasons. These reasons include but are not limited to culture, and
a collectivistic society. The western world, being individualistic, some people have less of
struggle speaking confidently about themselves and expressing, in words, their abilities and good
qualities as a person. Learning how to express self-confidence through language, can help them
build self-esteem in their workplace, school and life endeavors.

OBJECTIVES

1. Students will write sentences as to why they have a particular strength that demonstrates
self-confidence with 80% accuracy.

2. Students will be able to answer the brainstorming prompt and verbalize why with a
partner with 80% accuracy.

Lesson Plan Phases:

Warm Up

1. Warm Up- 10 minutes


a. The T enters the room and introduces herself to the class saying a greeting,
explaining where she lives, her cultural heritage and asks students what
countries are represented in this class.
b. “Good Afternoon everyone. My name is Geri and I attend UCR Extension.
I’m studying to be an English teacher to students just like you who want to
improve their English-speaking skills.”
c. Explain the video to the students
i. “We’re going to start of by watching speech given by a speaker named
Dr. Ivan Joseph. In the video, he will give you some directions to
follow. Please follow them. If he says, close your eyes, then close your
eyes, etc. Then, as a group we’re going to answer some questions
about how you felt watching the video.”
d. Play Youtube Video: Time: 5:35. If video equipment not available, have audio
available on phone/bluebooth speakers.

Presentation

1. T elicits reactions from students after watching this powerful video. T asks the
students the following questions:
a. Have you ever done this type of guided exercise before?
b. Does anyone know what this is called? – Short explanation.
i. If not, then explain:
1. “This is called guided imagery. What guided imagery is, is a
technique using words, or it can be music, to evoke a positive
imagery, or pictures, or your mind, that will cause you to
change how you feel about something or a situation. Athletes
sometimes use guided imagery to prepare for a big basketball
game. Or you can use this type of technique to prepare for a
presentation.

2. T says, “Let’s take a survey:


a. How many people could not envision themselves jumping into the water?
b. How many jumped in?
c. How many looked over and the judges and thought, “Yes! Perfect score!”

d. How many thought: “No I can’t this I’m too afraid!”

3. Display on the board the following:


a. “The belief in your ability to accomplish the task at hand.”
i. Ask students if they know what “at hand” means. If not explain: It is
an English idiom (idiom-a phrase that has a figurative/symbolic
meaning/definition that is different from the actual/literal meaning or
the phrase. For example: “Break a leg” which means good luck)
b. T asks the students (to check comprehension)
i. “What word did Dr. Joseph use to explain this statement or
definition?”
ii. Students should respond with “Self-Confidence.”
iii. T reads the definition again. T asks, “Is self-confidence negative or
positive?” Students should respond with “Positive.”
4. Explain:
a. Conditions such as where we are from, the country that we live in or the
Enviornment that we grew up in, affects how we feel about ourselves or our
self-confidence.
b. Our culture can affect our self-confidence or how we view ourselves.
i. In some societies, education is very important.
1. Age
2. Marriage
3. Type of Job/occupation
c. One way to express self-confidence is to say something good about ourselves.
To show we have the ability to accomplish a certain task.
d. Learning how to express self-confidence through language, can help them
build self-esteem in their workplace, school and life endeavors.

Practice:

1. T gives short writing prompt to brainstorm.


2. T explains to the students, that part of developing self-confidence is knowing what
your strengths are or things that we are good at.
a. T says to students: “Let’s take a few moments to brainstorm. Individually, I
want you to recall a time you feel confident and successful.

Production
1. T will divide students into pairs
a. Students are to discuss with their partners what they have written down.
b. T walks around room listening to discussion and encouraging students to
share. T adds input to spark conversation.

Wrap Up
1. T asks the students what they learned how to do today. Students should respond with
learning how to express themselves confidently. T asks the students how they felt
completing the exercise: Did some students have a hard time coming up with words
to say or examples to give? Did some students have a hard time verbalizing good
qualities about themselves.
