Aims of the English Language Syllabus in Primary Schools


Aims of the English Language in primary school are to provide the pupils with some skills and basic understanding of English
Language so that, they could speak, write and apply it inside and outside of the school.

Objectives of the English Language Syllabus in Primary Schools


Pupils should be able to:

i) Listen to and understand simple spoken English to be able to function in common everyday situations;
ii) Speak and respond clearly and appropriately in common everyday situations using simple language;
iii) To read and understand different kinds of texts (from print and electronic sources) for enjoyment and information;
iv) Write (including e-mail) for different purposes using simple language; and
v) Show an awareness and appreciation of moral values and love towards the nation.
Focus of the English Language Syllabus
Pupils must know how to:

1) Listen – This skill is very important to pupils because it could enhance the understanding of English Language. Teacher
must provide the song, rhymes and stories to make the student listen and focus. Pupils also could learn different skills such
as recalling the ideas, give details and talking about the ideas that they heard and listen.
2) Speaking – speaking is very important to provide the pupils with better pronunciations, way to speak and the way to say it
(phonetics). The activity like drama, discussion and role – playing could boost up their confidence level to speak.
3) Reading – Pupils should be able to read the English text by their own. This is very important because if they don’t know how
to read, they could not generate ideas from the text given. Teacher must encourage the pupils to read and the teacher must
show them to read and repair the pronunciation if wrong.
4) Writing – Pupils must know how to write simple text and generate ideas. By reading, listening and speaking the pupils could
improve their writing.

Pedagogical Reason

Pupils are in poor level of learning condition. The activity must in easiest way and easy to understand so that the pupils could get
positive feedback from the lesson. The easy understanding of the lesson could enhance pupil interest to learn English. The mind
set of this weak pupils that thought English are hard, could be broken. The lesson could increase pupils level of confidences.

GROUP TASK
Activity 1

Stage : Presentation or practice

Duration : 20 minutes

Content :

Types of occupation – Includes the common occupation that related to real life.

Teaching and learning activities :

I. Pupils are divided into 6 groups


II. Each group is given a piece of word maze and word-pictures matching exercise.
III. Through group discussion, each group try to find the occupation based on the pictures given and match the pictures with the
right occupation.
IV. The fastest group with the correct answer will be given a reward.

Activity 2
Stage: Evaluation or production

Duration : 15 minutes

Content :

Writing sentences of the occupation based on the pictures and words given. e.g. this is a Doctor. A doctor works at the hospital.
When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.

Teaching and learning activities :

I. Pupils are given a task-sheet to write some sentences of occupation


II. Pictures of the occupation and words are given as guidance.
III. An example is given to help the pupils to write the sentences.
