This document summarizes an activity called "tennis ball name toss" that combines elements of two warm up games. Participants sit in a circle and take turns saying their name while remembering the one or two names before theirs. The group order is then randomly changed and participants must say their name in the new order while keeping track of the previous names through sound alone. Completing this final step with eyes closed and just clapping requires strong group focus and concentration.

this game is a combination of Murray Schafer’s ‘passing names’ and a tennis ball warm up I once saw a drama teacher doing.
1. Get class in circle
2. Each participant says their name out loud in order around the circle. 3. Tell each participant to remember the name or two before theirs. 4. Randomly change the circle order....everyone picks a different spot 5. Each participant says their name in the same order that occurred in the earlier circle (this is already fun, and seemingly random...a good time or a supervisor to walk in and truly have no idea what is going on) 6. Repeat step five asking participant to create a ‘sound map’ of where the two previous names are said before it is their turn. To aid the creation of a sound map go around the circle a few times with eyes closed 7. Once step six seems to be going smoothly, try the same order with claps only...and eyes closed.
A successful completion of the last step is strangely exciting as well as
peaceful. The amount of group concentration is truly a marvel.
