A junior employee at a consulting firm was assigned a project with a timeline of 15 days that could have been completed in 5-6 days. When the employee informed their manager of this, the manager revealed the extended timeline was intentionally set to bill the client for more hours and increase profits. Questioning this unethical practice, the employee was unable to change it due to their junior status at the firm prioritizing profits over credibility with clients.

Prior to joining ISB, I worked at a consulting firm. Like many other businesses, a major dilemma in the consulting is whether to prioritize profits over long term credibility – more so because consultants have the freedom to define their workflow. Although an overall project budget is defined before a client engagement begins, consultants bill their clients on a per hour basis. I was part of a team serving a new client and the part of the project that was assigned to me had a timeline of 15 days, but I could have completed the work in 5-6 days. I went to my manager and informed him about this – however, to my utter disbelief, he told me that the reason behind the extended timeline was to bill the client a higher amount. Although I questioned this practice to increase profits, being a junior employee, I couldn’t do much to change that. ______________________________________________________________________________
