Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Gnarly National Holidays

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: SSKH1 Identify the national holidays and describe the people and/or events
celebrated.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner - Students leverage technology to take an active role in
choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☒ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://www.plickers.com

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I could address Universal Design for Learning principles to extend and
support the learning experiences for all students by having the hearing impaired read the prompts to
themselves. The seeing impaired will have their prompts zoomed in, magnified, or will be read aloud. English
Language Learners will have the choice of reading the prompts in their first language.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The instructional activity that will occur prior to the Plickers activity will be identifying new words. These
words are “national”, “holidays”, and “national holidays”. I will explain to the students that national holidays
are usually given to the citizens of America as a holiday, or day off. The students will then create their own
holiday based around something that is important to them. I will then introduce the Plickers activity by
showing the students a video called, Holidays | Learn about Holidays for Children
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyMBvHiErhA .
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The kindergartners will participate in the two
Plickers quizzes to assess their content knowledge and comprehension. The teacher will be reading the
question and answers allowed and will wait for all the students to make their answer choice. The teacher will
then take their mobile device and scan the room with the Plickers app to accept all the student’s answers.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
After the results are shown for each question, the teacher will assess the student’s knowledge and explain
any misconceptions on the federal holidays. The materials that are needed are internet access, the Plickers
cards, one for each child, a mobile device for the teacher, and the Plickers app. The Plickers activity should last
anywhere between 30 minutes to 40 minutes.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all the questions and display
correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I pre-selected correct answers to all the questions and will display the correct response to the class after the
SRT activity because I want to make sure that every student fully comprehends the correct answer. If there is
confusion after the responses, then immediate clarification will be provided.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the Plickers activity, the students will have time to
color about their favorite holiday or their created holiday from the beginning of the initial activity. While the
students are coloring, they will be read to about the federal holidays.
How will the data be used? The data that will be collected as a result of this activity is the individual’s
student’s proficiency in recollecting dates and definitions of American federal holidays. It will be used for the
teacher’s records on individual student progress, by the teacher. The activity results will not be added for a
calculated grade. I will discuss the aggregate, anonymous data with the whole class to help them learn. If
many students are consistently getting the wrong answers, then I will intervene and differentiate instruction
for the students by introducing simplified videos that explain each holiday.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. My personal learning goal for this activity is to
understand the Plickers technology and introducing it to the classroom. I hope to learn from this activity how
fun, educational SRTs reach all ages, even the young ones like Kindergartners. I hope it will help students
learn by taking them out of their natural paper and pencil element and letting them engage with technology
and interactive whiteboards.
Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities I created could impact student
learning by creating the connections between federal holidays and comprehension of their dates and
definitions. To further extend the lesson, I could have the students pick one of the federal holidays and create
a collage of symbols or objects that represent that federal holiday. Other technology tools that could be used
to supplement this activity are, introducing BrainPOP jr. videos, games, and coding about holidays.
