TWO THOUSAND YEARS
OF HISTORY
It is hardly surprising that
Barcelona is an open cosmopolitan
city. Profoundly aware of its long
history and proud of its rich
heritage, the present-day city is also
the product of diverse peoples and
cultures which have left their
imprint and shaped its character
throughout two thousand years.
Important vestiges still linger of
the primitive Roman Colony of
Barcino, founded in the first
century B.C. in the area presently
called the Gothic Quarter. The
Middle Ages was a splendid period
of city development and urban
growth, when the powerful
Aragonese empire extended

throughout the Mediterranean,
establishing trade and cultural
relations.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the
development project known as the
Eixample was undertaken in
response to needed expansion of
the city outside the medieval
nucleus. By the turn of the
century, Barcelona was
experiencing an emerging
industrialization and a flourishing
of the arts which contributed
decisively to the development of
the architectural and design
movement known as
“modernisme” (Catalonia’s version
of art nouveau). Great works of
leading modernist architects are
evidence of this and have left their
unique, unmistakable and personal
stamp on the urban landscape.
Barcelona’s designation as host of
the 1992 Summer Olympics
prompted an upgrading of the city.
This special sporting event not
only meant construction and
enhancement of the city’s
infrastructure and facilities, but
Barcelona was also able to show the
world its organizational skills, its
passionate character and
indisputable appeal.

El Prat International Airport is
located only twelve kilometers
from the city center. Train service
connects the airport with Sants
railway station every thirty
minutes. Every fifteen minutes the
Aerobús departs from the Plaza de
Catalunya for the airport.
The airport has three terminals:
A, B and C. The shuttle between
Barcelona and Madrid operates Port of Barcelona

Barcelona has eleven thousand
taxis identifiable by their
characteristic yellow and black
color. Taxis can be found at
specially marked taxi ranks or
simply by hailing any passing
vehicle with an illuminated green
rooftop light.
The ample public transport
network has five subway or Metro
lines and a fleet of nine hundred
buses covering all areas of the city.
A TOURIST CITY
This two thousand year old vibrant
city, with its own language,
Catalan, and special culture, has
become a leading tourist
destination in recent years. The
yearlong benign climate with
temperatures averaging around
seventeen degrees Centigrade,
the extraordinary wealth of its
architectural and artistic heritage,
and the unceasing activity in all
areas of economic and cultural
development attract more than
three million visitors each year.
Hotel capacity is approximately
thirty-five thousand, a figure that
increases steadily with the addition
of new establishments.
Hailed as the indisputable capital
of modernism, Spain’s version of
art nouveau, Barcelona has five
masterpieces in this particular
artistic style designated World
Heritage by UNESCO: Güell
Park, Palau Güell, Casa Milà or La
Pedrera, Palau de la Música
Catalana, and Hospital de la Santa
Creu i Sant Pau.
To facilitate visits, the city offers
many special services including a
tour bus (Bus Turístic), Barcelona
Card, Art Ticket, Art Nouveau
Route (Ruta del Modernisme) and
Walking Tours.

Tours
The best way to really get to
know a city is to walk
leisurely up and down its
streets and around its plazas.
Focusing all the senses on a
city’s physiognomy to discover
the character of its people
and its historic and artistic
legacy awards an inquisitive
traveler with a very gratifying
experience. A total of nine
walking tours through the
city have been proposed.
With the exception of the
route devoted to the
visionary architect Gaudí, all
the others are based on
geographical criteria and may
be totally or partially covered
on foot.
Before beginning a tour, we
recommend dropping in at
one of the Tourist Information
Offices in the city. Here,
visitors can check on opening
times, consult timetables and
learn about all the services
available, such as the tour bus
(Bus Turístic), a convenient
and comfortable way to
view the principal sights
of interest.

Gothic Quarter
The true heart of the city is
the Barri Gòtic or Gothic
Quarter. Roman Barcino was
founded here, and since then,
the area has been and
continues to be the supreme
historic, religious and political
center of the city. It presently
occupies approximately what
in Roman times was the area
of the colony’s fortified
enclosure.
Up until the beginning of the
twentieth century, this area
had been known as the
Cathedral district.
An ambitious reform project
by City Hall, including the
construction of some
neo-Gothic elements to
enhance this monumental

ensemble, gave rise to the
present name of Barri Gòtic or
Gothic Quarter.
An unhurried stroll through
these pedestrian streets
and squares is absolutely
indispensable to appreciate its
ancient history, often livened
up by the presence of
spontaneous musicians, fairs,
flea markets or some type of
festive event, such as the
sardanes (a popular Catalonian
dance in circles, to the tune of
the cobla or orchestra) held
every Sunday at midday in
front of the Cathedral.

La Rambla
The famous pedestrian street
of La Rambla is a long,
colorful boulevard zig-
zagging slightly through the
old quarter like a lifeline,
linking the centrally-located
Plaza de Catalunya to the
harbor. A busy
communications hub and
important commercial area,
the spacious plaza is a good
starting point for our walk
along Barcelona’s most
emblematic and cosmopolitan
street. Underneath the square
is the Tourist Information
Office. La Rambla is like an
animated street theater with
a kaleidoscope of curious
characters; a people-watcher’s
paradise and microcosm of
unceasing activity at any hour
of the day and night.

The name Rambla comes from
an Arabic word meaning
“riverbed”, an allusion to the
old natural water canals
leading to the sea. La Rambla
is many streets in one, and its
name changes at each
different section, one of the
reasons why it is popularly
referred to in the plural as
“Las Ramblas”.
Our walk takes us down
towards the sea, and so we
will begin at the Rambla de
Canaletes (9), the section
nearest Plaza de Catalunya.

Between the streets of

our eyes are drawn to the

right on to Calle Nou de la
Rambla, we discover one of
Gaudi’s masterpieces, the
mansion called Palau Güell,

La Ribera
The district of La Ribera is
one of the most charming
and beloved areas in the
Ciutat Vella, the old quarter
of Barcelona. During the
Middle Ages, it was the
center of the trade guilds,
commerce and shipping in
Barcelona. Today, there are
many testimonies to its
vibrant past. Many streets still
bear names of the craft or
trade carried out there in the
exhibition center, the former past (Vidriera –glassmakers,

tribute. Remodeling of old
buildings and the existence of
numerous small restaurants
and bars have added special
charm to this area.
Our itinerary begins on Calle
Argenteria, a street leading
from the busy Via Laietana to
the Basilica of Santa Maria
del Mar (25). Laietana refers
to the Iberian tribe of the
Laietani who settled here
before the Romans. During
the first half of the twentieth
century, the street was laid
out in a straight line crossing
this part of the old city in

The Church of Santa Maria
del Mar, better known as the
Cathedral of La Ribera, is one
of the finest examples of
Gothic architecture in
Catalonia. Built entirely in
the fourteenth century, the
harmonious proportions
and serene grandeur of this
ensemble create a powerful
impact.
Off to one side of the church,
in the direction of the Paseo
del Born, there is a small
square that holds special
historic significance, Fossar de

Today, it can be safely said

that Barcelona has been
happily reconciled with the
sea. Even though Barcelona’s
history is intimately linked to
the Mediterranean Sea, it is
also true that the city turned
its back on the sea for a long
time. Activity in the port
focused on the traffic of
goods, and the coastline
was lined with abandoned
factories languishing by
the railroad tracks. When
Barcelona was chosen in
1986 to host the 25th Summer
Olympic Games, the idea
of opening the city up to
the sea became a great
challenge for municipal

Before commencing our walk
through the Eixample, we
must first stop off at the Palau
de la Música Catalana (47),
the supreme achievement of
modernism which has
masterfully combined applied
decorative arts with
architecture.
This concert hall,
designed by Catalonian
architect Lluís
Domènech i Montaner
and built between
1905 and 1908 as
Casa Lleó Morera

permanent home of the Orfeó
Català, is a symbol of
Catalonian culture, art and
music. Even if you don’t have
tickets for a concert, you can
join one of the guided visits
to see this modernist treasure,
declared World Heritage by
the UNESCO.
After strolling through the
pedestrian shopping area
along the streets of Comtal
and Portal de l’Àngel, we
come to Plaza de Catalunya,
the communications hub
joining the old city and the
Eixample. The boulevard of
Passeig de Gràcia is the main
thoroughfare. The first neo-
Gothic houses encountered on
this walk give an idea of the
architecture characteristic of
the early twentieth century.
Between the streets of Consell
de Cent and
Aragó is the
famous
“manzana
de la
discordia”
(block of

The various pointed towers
crowning the edifice have
prompted its popular
nickname of “Casa de les
Punxes” (House of Points).
At number 108 Paseo de Sant
Joan stands another mansion
by the same architect, Casa
Macaya (53).
It belongs to “la Caixa”
Foundation and is open to
the public.

From several blocks away, we
can make out the towers of
the spectacular Templo de la
Sagrada Familia (See Gaudí
route). If we take Avinguda
Gaudí, the middle of which is
a pedestrian walkway, we
come to one of the most
impressive modernist
ensembles: Hospital de la
Santa Creu i Sant Pau (54),
a public hospital designed
by Domènech i Montaner.
It occupies a plot equal to
nine city blocks of the
Eixample. Forty-eight
pavilions are distributed
among the spacious garden
areas for visitors to walk
through (without having to
be a patient). Check times of
guided visits to this World
Heritage site.
Gaudí
Barcelona would not be the
same without the distinctive
mark left by the works of
Gaudí. Considered by many to
be the genius of modernism,
the truth is Gaudí represents a
separate case and is in a class
by himself. His architecture
appears within the framework
of the modernist period, but
the unique character of his
creations and the introverted
and mystical personality of
the architect himself set Gaudí
apart from the rest of his
contemporaries.
Antoni Gaudí was born in 1852
into a family of boilermaker
craftsmen in Reus in Tarragona
province. The time he spent
observing nature as well as
the artisan work of his father
would leave an indelible mark
on the architect’s future
creativity. Gaudí’s work is not
only the result of a runaway
imagination, but also
endless practical work and
experimentation with all
types of materials, leading to
innovations in building
structures and sculptural forms
unprecedented at the time.
A chronological list of Gaudí’s
works in Barcelona will give
readers an idea of the
evolution of the great
architect.

Casa Vicens (55), at number
18 Calle Carolines in the
Gràcia district, was the first
important work designed by
Gaudí, built between 1883
and 1888. Commissioned by
tile manufacturer Manuel
Vicens, its style was inspired
by Moorish Mudéjar art and
artistically combines stone,
brick and ceramic tiles. This
early house is privately owned
and can only be admired from
the outside.
The pair of pavilions of Finca
Güell (56) on Avinguda de
Pedralbes was commissioned
by a wealthy, upper middle
class businessman, who would
become Gaudí’s good friend
and benefactor, Eusebi Güell,
a name permanently linked to
the architect. Built at the
entrance to the estate, the
pavilions were intended for
the stable and guardhouse.
They now house the offices of
the Gaudí Chair of the
Polytechnic University of
Catalonia. The impressive
wrought iron gate is
particularly eye-catching, with
its fierce dragon “standing
guard” over the entrance to
the garden of Hesperides.
Palau Güell (57), on Calle Nou
de la Rambla, is an opulent
mansion Gaudí constructed as
a residence between 1886 and
1888 for his most prominent
patron, Count Eusebi Güell.

Güell Park (60) was originally
envisioned as a residential
English-style garden city,
hence the word “park”, but
the initiative was unsuccessful
and only a few model houses
were built. One of them is
now used as the Gaudí
House-Museum and was
inhabited at one time by
Gaudí himself. Güell donated
the land to the City in 1923,
and since then it has been a
public park. The imaginative
integration of architectonic
elements in a natural setting
holds in store myriad visual
surprises for the visitor.

Casa Batlló (61), on the
famous city block known as
the “block of discord” of
Passeig de Gràcia, emphasizes
the sculptural and decorative
aspects of Gaudian
architecture. Although the
edifice was not actually built
by Gaudí, he completely
transformed it in 1906.
Casa Milà or La Pedrera (62)
stands on a corner lot of
Passeig de Gràcia as if it were
a gigantic sculpture in which
curves prevail. This residential
apartment building was
Gaudí’s last work of civil
architecture. Built between
1906 and 1910, it was
commissioned by the textile
industrialist Pere Milà. A ticket
includes a visit to the startling
loft formed by 270 parabolic
arches of flat-laid brick, the
incredible multi-leveled
roof with warrior-like
chimneys and
ventilators, and
Güell Park
one of the large apartments
decorated in early twentieth
century style. The informative
exhibit in the loft helps
convey the scope and genius
of Gaudí’s work. To say
a visit here is worthwhile is
definitely an understatement.
The Basilica of the Holy
Family (Templo de la Sagrada
Familia) (63) was undeniably
Gaudí’s masterwork to which
he devoted more than forty
years of his life, from 1883 to
his untimely death in 1926.
He began the four
towers of the
Nativity
façade,
an amazing
gospel put

to stone and ceramics, but
lived to see only one of them
finished. Construction on this
emblematic and monumental
temple continues today,
financed exclusively by
anonymous donations and
contributions from visitors.
The final project consists of
eight towers, the tallest rising
to a height of 170 meters.
The sheer magnitude of
Gaudí’s project has made the
Sagrada Familia the city’s most
famous landmark. Its master
architect was said to have
remarked: “Barcelona
will be known for
this temple”.

of Avinguda Marqués de
Comillas, we find two
outstanding buildings: one is
the excellent reconstruction
of the Mies van der Rohe

Fair. Today this classic
example of rationalist
architecture can still be
visited. Across the street
from the pavilion, occupying
an entire block, is the
CaixaForum (68). This new
Cultural Center of “la Caixa”

It is a splendid example
of modernist industrial
architecture. The sculptural
entrance to the Foundation,
consisting of two steel “trees”
supporting a plate-glass roof,

architect Arata Isozaki.

surprises waiting in this
cultural center.
The same street leads to the
Poble Espanyol (69), an
interesting mock village
beckoning visitors to stroll
through its streets and
squares with full-scale replicas
of architectural structures
from the different Spanish
regions. Built also for the 1929
World’s Fair, today it is a
center for recreation and
traditional crafts.
A fun way to get to Montjuïc
hill is from the Metro station
of Paral·lel. From here, a
modern Funicular (70) railway
trundles up the hill to Avenida
de Miramar. Two options are
now possible: the first is a visit
to the Fundació Miró and
Anella Olímpica, and the
other is to go up to the castle.
To visit the latter, all you have
to do is cross and go to the Poble Espanyol
cable car station to catch the

may wish to visit Montjuïc’s
several attractive gardens.

Lastly, a world of theater and
cultural entertainment is
another good reason to come
to Montjuïc. On Calle Lleida
stands the renovated Palau
d’Esports (81), as well as the
Ciutat del Teatre (82), a
complex comprising the new
site of the Teatre Lliure and
Mercat de les Flors, in
addition to the Institut
del Teatre. On nearby
Paseo de Santa Madrona,
the Museu d’Arqueologia de
Catalunya (83) takes visitors
on a journey to distant
periods of Catalan history.
A little further on and we
come to the gardens of the
Teatre Grec (84), an open-air
theater that lends its name
to a summer festival of
performing arts. (See
the section on Cultural
Activities.)
Tibidabo and Collserola
Approached from the sea,
Barcelona appears to wear
a luxuriant green crown
discernible amid the woods
bordering the northwestern
part of the city. These are the
Collserola hills, the highest
point being Tibidabo, easily
identifiable by a white basilica
on the top.
Mount Tibidabo has been a
favorite excursion destination
ever since an amusement park
was built there with a
funicular to take visitors to
the top. The unsurpassed
views from the summit give
forth a multi-colored city,
unfolding below and
stretching to the sea. The
numerous attractions in the
large metropolitan park of

spot into a favorite for those

At the start of Avinguda del
Tibidabo, we can begin by
hopping on the Tramvia Blau

Benedictine community.
The first printing press in
Catalonia was installed here
in 1499, and since then, the
abbey has continued to
publish all types of books
and magazines. Particularly
noteworthy is the Bible of
Montserrat, a magnificent
translation of the sacred texts
with notes and commentaries
by the monks.
The sanctuary grounds, 725
meters above sea level, are
comprised of a monastery and
a basilica, as well as numerous
services for visitors. The
Museu de Montserrat houses
an archeological and artistic
collection of great value.
The recent opening of a
permanent exhibit about
the mountain’s natural
surroundings, the history of
Montserrat and monastery life
is very informative and helps
visitors to learn about this
sacred place.
Excursions and hikes in this
unique spot hold more than a
few surprises along the way.
The well-marked hilly path to
the Holy Cave called Santa
Cueva, one and a half
kilometers long, is studded
with fifteen sculptural groups
representing the mysteries of
the rosary. A cable car also
transports visitors comfortably
up to the sacred cave.

Two hermitage chapels
perched on the highest points
of the mountain range offer
spectacular views: San Juan
and San Jerónimo. Both have
their own cable cars to ascend
the mountain in an almost
vertical ride. Montserrat, the

Castelldefels and Sitges
If you travel to Barcelona by
air and arrive at El Prat airport,
you can probably catch a
glimpse of the extensive beach
of Castelldefels. This resort of
around 50,000 inhabitants
grew up around the castle of
Fels, which gave its name to
the town, now an important
residential and tourist center.
Many people live in
Castelldefels and commute to
work in Barcelona due to their
proximity and the good public
transport available.
Castelldefels is only twenty
minutes from the city, and
trains run frequently between
the two points.
Lining the five kilometers of
fine sandy beaches are
numerous houses, apartments,
hotels and restaurants, in
addition to a series of well-
equipped camp sites by the
sea. An artificial waterway
1,200 meters long was built
for the 1992 Olympics, the
Canal Olímpico, where the
kayak races where held in its
tranquil water. Rowing can
now be added to the already
wide range of possibilities for
recreation here.
A short distance from
Castelldefels is the captivating
seaside resort of Sitges. It
pioneered in tourism at the
end of the nineteenth century
when it became a haven for
creative artists and writers.
The oldest part of the town
and the most interesting is
known as the Vila Vella, which
occupies a rocky promontory
between the beach of Sant
Sebastià and the extensive
beach of La Ribera. At one
end rises the picturesque
parish church, the most
characteristic image of the
town and the one usually
portrayed on canvas or with
watercolors by countless
painters. In the attractive Vila
Vella, the interesting museums
of Maricel and Cau Ferrat can
be found. In addition, the
Town Hall and the Palau del
Rei Moro form an attractive
architectural ensemble. The
Museu Maricel occupies a part
of the palace of the same
name, a singular structure
rebuilt in 1910 on the former
site of a hospital and
fishermen’s dwellings. The
museum houses collections of
Romanesque and Gothic art,
Catalan sculpture from the
nineteenth century and a
modern art gallery.
Sitges
Next door to Maricel palace, we
find Cau Ferrat, residence and
studio of the versatile writer-
painter Santiago Rusiñol, a
meeting place for numerous
Catalonian modernist artists at
the close of the nineteenth
century. In his home at Cau
Ferrat, now a museum, Rusiñol
gathered his collection of
artistic iron, ceramics and
paintings, and organized his
famous modernist festivals,
with exhibits and avant-garde
theatrical and musical
performances.
Sitges’ third museum is
located in the heart of the
town, the Museu Romàntic.
Installed in an elegant
nineteenth century house, the
museum displays the furniture
and effects of a wealthy home
during the Romantic period.
It also houses an enchanting
collection of antique dolls.
The two-kilometer La Ribera
beach and palm-fringed
promenade running alongside
is one of the town’s biggest
attractions. This area
concentrates numerous bars,
restaurants and hotels
catering to the lively social
and nightlife in the town. The

Among the most prominent
festivals and events is the
popular famous carnival, where
spectacular costumes are all the
rage. The Rallye Internacional
Barcelona-Sitges of antique cars
is held annually in mid-March.
The Sitges International Film
Festival of Catalonia takes place
the first half of October. This
event, devoted primarily to
horror and science fiction films,
has now been divided into
different sections, enormously
increasing the number of films
shown. Famous film stars, fans
and autograph-seekers
have an annual date at this
seaside town.
Lastly, everyone coming to
Sitges should purchase one of
the four thousand bottles of
malvasí, the popular local
liqueur produced here each
year using age-old methods.
Castelldefels beach
The Penedés and the Cavas
The natural region of the
Penedés is the most important
wine producing area of
Catalonia for the quantity and
quality of its grapevines, its
pioneering role in
technological innovation, and
the marketing capacity of its
wineries that export its wines
(with the Penedés ”D.O.” seal
of origin), including sparkling
wine, all over the world.
Lawsuits with France over the
use of the term champagne, a
name derived from the French
region, resulted in an
agreement to call the local
sparkling wine made
according to the champenoise
method “cava”, a name which
has easily been adopted. By
extension, “cavas” is a name
also used to mean the
wineries.
Vilafranca del Penedés, the
region’s principal town, is
considered the wine capital,
while the neighboring town
of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia is
known as the “cava” capital.
Vilafranca’s center reflects a
rich and dynamic urban life,
where it is possible to see fine
examples of modernist
architecture and elegant
mansions. One of them houses
the Museu del Vi, where
visitors to this museum are
taken on a journey through

production, with wine tasting
included. Amphorae and
other antique artifacts are
preserved, as well as
agricultural implements
related to vine growing.
Ninety percent of all the
“cava” produced in Spain,
some 130 million bottles per
year, is produced in Sant
Sadurní d’Anoia. For a
relatively small municipality,
this means practically its
entire economic activity. One
of the most important
sparkling wine producers is
Cavas Codorniu. A visit to
their facilities is a treat.
Located in the outskirts of the
town, it is a handsome
example of modernist
architecture by the architect
Puig i Cadafalch, who totally
remodeled the old farm of
Can Codorniu. A visit includes
a mini-train ride through
some of the endless
underground cellars where
the bottles are stored.
Another of the famous
wineries is Caves Freixenet,
founded in 1889. Its facilities
are also splendid.

Vic and Ripoll
Halfway between the
Pyrenees and the sea, the
capital of the region of Osona
is one of the most dynamic
inland cities in Catalonia. Vic’s
long history is visible in the
streets and squares of its
historic center and coexists in
harmony with a vibrant,
cosmopolitan city of profound
commercial traditions.
The remarkable Plaza Major is
the center of the old quarter
and the venue for the
traditional Saturday market.
The impressive Cathedral of
Vic is a blend of various
architectural styles, ranging
from Romanesque to
neoclassical. Of particular
interest in the interior are the
murals painted by Josep Maria
Sert in the 1930’s. The golden
and ochre hues give the
ensemble a very special
monumental feeling. Close by
is the Museu Episcopal, with
an archeological selection and
collections from different
sectors of the diocese of Vic.
The nickname of "Ciutat dels
Sants" (City of Saints) brings to
mind the various saints who
have been a part of the town,
such as St. Michael of the
Saints, St. Anthony Mary Claret,
St. Joachina de Vedruna, to
name a few. Vic is also the
birthplace of the great Catalan
philosopher Jaume Balmes.
There is a museum devoted
entirely to the author. Another
interesting museum is the
Museu de l’Art de la Pell, which
shows Vic’s great tradition in
the working of leather.
Ever since 1989, at the end of
October, Vic turns into an
active musical center. The
renowned Mercat de Música
Viva attracts all types of
musical groups performing
their latest compositions.
Thirty kilometers north of Vic
and 110 from Barcelona, we
find Ripoll, known as the
“Cradle of Catalonia”.
Its famous Benedictine
monastery was one of the
leading monastic centers in
medieval Catalonia and the
Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll
oldest, founded in the year
879 by the first count of the
Catalan dynasty. The ancient
abbey was restored at the end
of the nineteenth century and
preserves its extraordinary
carved portal, the finest
example of Catalan
Romanesque sculpture, as well
as a beautiful two-story
cloister. The pre-Pyrenees
region of Ripollés has some
picturesque places, including
the Núria valley, accessible
only by a rack-rail train.

Terrassa
An industrial city thirty
kilometers from Barcelona,
Terrassa constantly competes
with neighboring Sabadell for
economic supremacy. However,
Terrassa offers visitors an
interesting architectonic legacy
as well. There are three main
places that should not be
missed when visiting the city:
the Masia Freixa, the Museu
de la Ciència i la Tècnica de
Catalunya, and the ensemble
made up of the three pre-
Romanesque churches of
Sant Pere.

The amazing churches are
composed of three robustly-
constructed old stone buildings
erected between the eighth
and tenth centuries. The
Masía Freixa is a modernist
architectural gem with
unmistakable Gaudian airs,
although it is the work of local
architect Lluís Muncunill. This
isolated house, located in Sant
Jordi park, is currently the site
of Terrassa’s Conservatory of
Music.
Special mention merits the
Vapor Aymerich, Amat i
Jover building, Terrasa’s
aforementioned Museum of
Science and Technology. This
former large textile mill is one
of the finest examples of
modernist industrial
architecture. One of its main
features is a succession of
arches through which sunlight
streams, naturally illuminating
the interior main floor. Other
sections of the museum house
temporary exhibits, as well as
permanent displays about the
textile industry and steam
engines. Theatrical
presentations are also
organized, aimed at
awakening the interest of
visitors of all ages.

Cultural
Activities
It is no coincidence that
Barcelona has enthusiastically
undertaken the organization
of the first Universal Forum
of Cultures. In 2004,
Barcelona once again
demonstrated its
organizational skills and
capacity for innovation in all
spheres of cultural activity
with this distinguished event
of international scope in an
appeal to all the cultures
around the world to express
themselves. The city became
a huge open stage for
creativity in the promotion of
dialogue and coexistence
between cultures.
According to the UNESCO,
the activities of the Forum
focus on three main themes:
cultural diversity, sustainable
development and conditions
for peace. The ambitious
program included a long list
of debates, exhibits and
shows from all over the
world. There is no doubt
Barcelona’s calling for
hosting cultural events is
deeply ingrained in the
city’s life.
A City of Festivals
Barcelona’s summer festival,
popularly know as Festival
Grec, is the most significant
cultural event held in the city
on warm summer nights. From
the end of June until the
beginning of August, theater,
dance and music flood the
stages and take to the street
to show off the latest trends
in performing arts and
contemporary music. For over
twenty-five years, the Grec
Festival has become a cultural
landmark during Barcelona’s
summer. Teatre Grec, a Greek
amphitheater in Montjuïc
park, is the stage par-
excellence and lends the
festival its name.
Barcelona is host to many
other festivals of all types,
from Tradicionarius of popular
and traditional music, to the
Sónar Festival of advanced
music and multimedia art, and
including the International
Guitar Festival, the Jazz
Festival and Festival of
Ancient Music, to cite a few.
A Passion for Music
Barcelona’s passion for music
is firmly bound to its opera
tradition. The Gran Teatre del
Liceu on La Rambla is the best
exponent. Inaugurated in the
mid-nineteenth century and
recently rebuilt after a fire in
1994, it is a symbol of the city,
along with universal opera
stars Montserrat Caballé and
Josep Carreras.
The Palau de la Música
Catalana, a modernist
architectural treasure built by
Domènech i Montaner, has a
busy agenda with more than
three hundred concerts
annually, ranging from
symphonies to pop music and
flamenco. All quality musical
expressions, whatever their
type, have a place at the Palau.
This extraordinary concert hall
was created as the home of
the Orfeó Catalá, a choral
society with more than a
hundred years of history and
profound popular roots.
A new concert hall has
been recently added to the
already long list of facilities
throughout the city. The
Auditori, by the architect
Rafael Moneo, has
contributed to the
revitalization of the area of
Glòries. Built using the latest
technology, the acoustics in
the main hall are exceptional.
It has a capacity of 2,300
spectators. The Auditori is also
the permanent home of
Barcelona’s National
Symphony Orchestra.
A program of outdoor
concerts, in the interior of
churches such as the Basilica
of Santa Maria del Mar,
or in any of the numerous
institutional or private halls,
completes the variety and
wealth of the musical scene
in Barcelona.
Performing Arts
Not to be outdone, activity in
the domain of theater and
dance also has a great
tradition in Barcelona. You
need only look at what’s on
at the theater to get an idea
of the creativity and
enormous variety offered in
the different theaters. The
presence of local theater
groups has also been felt in
the international arena

Visual Arts
If performing arts, as we
have already said, play an
important role in Barcelona’s
cultural panorama, we must
not overlook the prominent
place occupied by the visual
arts. Barcelona’s artistic
heritage, housed in over forty
museums in the city, includes
works by such universal artists
as Picasso, Miró and Tàpies.
The Museu d’Art
Contemporani (MACBA), a
luminous building designed
by Richard Meier in the old
district of El Raval, has been a
stimulus in the diffusion and
discovery of avant-garde
trends.
