MAHATMA GANDHI

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujrat .He
was the Indian activist who was the leader of the Indian independence movement against
British colonial rule. Gandhi led India to Independence and inspired movements for civil
rights and freedom across the world. He was also called as “Bapu” and also known as
“Father of Nation”.

Gandhi led Indians in challenging the British – imposed salt tax with 400km Dandi
Salt March in 1930,and later in calling British to Quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned for
many years, upon many occasions, in both India and South Africa. He lived modestly in self
– sufficient residential community. He completed his Bachelor in Laws in University college,
London. He was leader of the Indian National Congress and was a writer .He was a lawyer by
profession and he was criticised for refusing to protest the hanging of Bagath Singh,
Sukhdev, Udham Sigh and Rajguru. On 30 January 1948 he was assassinated by a Hindu
nationalist, Nathuram Godse by firing three bullets into his chest. His birthday on 2 October
is celebrated in India as “Gandhi Jayanthi”.
