Grid modernization is a "mission critical" initiative for the Utilities industry.

Many electric distribution

utilities are deploying distribution automation applications as part of their grid modernization strategies to
improve reliability, efficiency, asset utilization and performance of the power delivery system. The
success of the distribution automation applications, however, depends on a highly reliable and secure
network that can support low latency transmission of messages to make decisions in near real-time.
Learn about the key distribution automation challenges and how General Electric (GE) and Aeris
Communications help the Utility industry address these challenges.

Architecture Characteristics:
The Orbit NX915 Mesh algorithm is proprietary and does not follow the 802.15.4 standard. However the benefit is that Orbit
has the freedom to achieve much higher throughputs compared to existing mesh standards by using dynamic fragmentation
and allowing all tiers to communicate simultaneously. NX915 can run over the air RF Encryption using 256bit keys between
any two Orbit MCRs for added security.
Two methods of self healing are available:
1. Best Available Path: Featured above, if SAF and REMOTE modem modes are set to AUTO, upon power up each would
scan channels looking for upstream SAF or AP nodes, and would run analytics to pick the path based on the most
optimum RSSI and SAF depth. This calculation may take one and up to a few minutes depending on the size of the
network. Upon synchronization, the algorithm runs again only when the signal to AP/SAF weakens or is lost.
2. First Available Path: If a Remote or SAF’s modem mode is set to a specific mode (e.g. 1250Kbps), they will
synchronize to the first available/seen synchronization node (AP or SAF), despite the fact that it may not be the most
optimum path. This mode is fast, and may bring the network up in seconds.
Design Considerations: Use First Available Path method if you have a well designed network with predictable and strong
failover paths. Use Best Available Path if there is unpredictability regarding RSSI or if the network has moving nodes in it.

Architecture Characteristics
Flexibility: 4G LTE or Global 3G Global are both supported as simultaneous cellular uplinks. The 3G Global card also
supports dual SIM for dual carrier support.
Scalability: Architecture is scalable to virtually limitless CPE endpoints depending on VPN concentrators capabilities in
customer data center or cellular carrier APN size
Enhanced Security: Orbit’s embedded firewall enables secure IPSec VPN tunnels with 256 bit encryption between
customer sites and data center in addition to stateful packet filtering.
Uplink Redundancy: Orbit allows for Active/Active or Active/Standby (roadmap) uplink redundancy to same or different
carriers. Redundancy achieved via routing. Additional site to site VPNs possible for up to 5 sessions per CPE.

Architecture Characteristics
Flexible Uplinks: Orbit can take part simultaneously of private 900MHz unlicensed networks as well as 3G/4G cellular
networks for redundancy or load sharing purposes.
Redundancy: Layer 3 static routing and/or Active/Active or Active/Standby configurations between cellular and private
900MHz can be used to create redundant uplinks and improve network availability
OPEX Savings: In such a deployment, the 900MHz network could be used primarily and in the event of a failure the
cellular network would be used as a backup in order to minimize data charges over the cellular network.

Application Characteristics
A converged FAN is a scalable access network that is capable of securely supporting multiple Distribution
Automation applications with various SLAs and requirements
A converged FAN requires an RF Access network that has bandwidth, security, low latency, QoS, and a variety of
media access in order to enable the collapsing of multiple applications over a single RF infrastructure
In this example, Orbit MCR900 acts as both the AP and remote in an 1.25Mbps 900MHz Point to Multipoint
network with a range of up to 30 miles (clear LOS) and a strong arsenal of security and QoS policing features to
ensure secure SLA delivery for applications.

Network Range Can Be Extended to > 100 miles using Orbit’s Store & Forward

Application Characteristics
Orbit’s 900MHz technology allows for higher RF sensitivity and gain and an extension of more than 30 miles
between any two hops (based on terrain). Its Store-and-Forward technology allows for the daisy chaining of up
to 8 Orbits to further extend the network deep into rural areas. Each one of those Orbits can then act as a leaf
Access Point as required to further widen the area of coverage.
Due to the half duplex nature of 900MHz ISM, the 1.25Mbps bandwidth of the Orbit will be split over the
number of remote locations. The more remotes per 900MHz access point, the less bandwidth will be available.
However the usage of efficient SCADA protocols such as DNP3 allows for a larger scalability for cost
optimization.

Application Characteristics
An MCR Orbit 900 + Cellular network is built to provide redundant WAN access between utility substations for a variety of
applications including Large Scale GOOSE Interlocking, Distribution Protection, Control, VoIP, Physical Security, etc…
Orbit is configured to operate in a secure/encrypted 900MHz Mesh topology + Cellular backup to improve High Availability
through providing redundant paths over different network types.
We setup secure IPSec VPN tunnels between the sites (regardless of the underlying radio technology), over which we build
Ethernet-over-GRE tunnels to bridge the Layer 2 GOOSE protocol over the primary 900MHz network. Should the 900Mhz
network fail, Orbit detects the loss of contact over a certain path and automatically switches to using a backup GRE tunnel
over the cellular network.
Security: RF layer encryption is enabled between all 900MHz mesh nodes. And additional IPSec VPN/Encryption is enabled on
top for added security for both the 900MHz and cellular paths.

Application Characteristics
A digital IEC 61850 controller is located at the Distribution Substation (DS) providing distributed fault/line for
downstream reclosers located at renewables sites. DG, Line faults, Under Frequency Load Shedding are
examples of protection applications that may require < 100msec one way latency in a distribution setting.
Using its high performance 900MHz MAC technology, Orbit can enable high speed and deterministic
communication between the DS controller and the downstream controllers over ranges extending to > 30
miles (depending on terrains) between hops, with a latency tunable to less than 5msec one-way.
Should the primary 900Mhz link go down, Orbit automatically switches over to a backup Layer 2 path using
Ethernet-over-GRE-over-Cellular. Using 4G/LTE technology with the right antennas can ensure good cellular
reception and latencies in the order of <50msec one way (Verizon, TX test).
