Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity will be beneficial for ELL and ESOL students because once they have created their book and
video, they can replay it numerous times for a deeper understanding. The students are also capable of pulling
it up at home and reading it with the assistance of their parents. Having this book available give those who
didn’t quite understand the time to re-read and study listen and understand what each animal is without any
time restrictions.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will start this lesson by introducing PowerPoint to the students and giving them a tutorial of
how to use it. The teacher will start by showing the children how to search for desired pictures and plug them
into their PowerPoint. Once the students has mastered adding pictures, they will be taught how to add text.
The teacher will write down each animal on the board that children call out on the board to have correct
spelling. The students will type each animal on a page including a corresponding picture of their choosing. The
students will then be asked to record their voice on each page saying the name of the animal pictured.
After each student has completed their book, the teacher will ask them to read their books without
voice to quiz themselves. The teacher will print out the PowerPoint turning it into a physical book and given
to the students for extensive practice. Each student will be given the opportunity to read their book to the
class. The teacher will also add each book to the classroom blog to parents to see.
Reflective Practice:
This activity Is favored because it allows for students to be hand on and creative while creating their very
own learning tool. Students are already familiar with books, but it will be very exciting for them to become
authors and create a book of their own. To extend this activity the students can give a description of each
animal and what influenced their determination of what the animal was. This can be an Introductory activity
that can extend to what family and food chain each animal belongs to using sites such as BrainPop to get
relative information.
