INTRODUCTION

DWIM, broadcasting as 89.5 Star FM Baguio, is a music FM radio

station owned by Bombo Radyo Philippines. Its station's studio and
transmitter are located at #87 Lourdes Subdivision Rd., Baguio City.

89.5 STAR FM had its early beginnings way back in August

1991, when Baguio was still recovering from the ruins of the July 1990
killer quake. It can be said that indeed, the timing was right, that Bombo
Radyo Philippines decided to widen its broadcast horizon in Baguio by
putting up an FM Station to “set the pace” and at the same time, to
augment the present status then being enjoyed by its AM counterpart in
the City of Baguio. Test broadcasts began on August 21, 1991. The
station started off as 89.5 WIM, The Rhythm of the City. Shortly after, in
a matter of half a year, the Radio Research Council, through its deputized
survey agencies conducted the official radio listenership survey in Baguio.

On April 22, 1994, all FM stations of Bombo Radyo Philippines,

were re-launched as STAR FM stations, save those that only began
operations on or after this date. The move to re-name all FM stations as
STAR FM was in a bid to provide a more “solid” identity for all FM stations
of Bombo Radyo Philippines, since the FM stations were so closely
associated with, if not mistaken for their AM counterparts. Hence, 89.5
STAR FM is now on its 21st year as STAR FM and still form part of a
whole network of 18 AM and 12 FM stations, all contributing to the
present status of Bombo Radyo Philippines.

Star FM Baguio operates at the frequency of 89.5 MHz.

Furthermore, 89.5 Star FM Baguio primarily covers the areas in Baguio,
Benguet and secondarily covers the nearby provinces, with spill-overs up
to as far Tarlac, Pangasinan and La Union. Its broadcast operations are
backed up by a powerful 10-Kilowatt Energy Onix Transmitter, with an
Orban Optimod 8600 Audio Processor, state-of-the-art equipment and
the cream of the crop manpower. There are three (3) major departments
all working together on a complementary basis: the Administrative,
Production, Technical/Engineering. The program formats for 89.5 Star FM
Baguio are contemporary MOR, OPM, and news.

A.) FLOOR PLAN

Both Bombo Radyo Baguio and 89.5 STAR FM Baguio is located in the
same building at #87 Lourdes Subdivision Rd., Baguio City. On the right side
of the buiding is the Bombo Radyo Baguio and on the left side is the 89.5
STAR FM Baguio.
At 89.5 STAR FM Baguio DJ’s booth, a console is already placed in the
booth with all the inputs such as microphones, telephone, computer. The
music, commercials, and the sequence of the program are stored in the
computer. The DJ herself is operating the console. To eliminate interferences
from the outside, the DJ’s Booth is to be soundproof. Hence, a soundproofing
material is all over the booth to ensure no sound will go out to interfere with
the other rooms beside or across. After the DJ’s booth, the next room is the
master’s control room where the main transmitter and auxiliary transmitter
are located. 89.5 STAR FM uses digital transmitter that output a power of
5000 watts. Then, after the master’s control room is the conference room.
Then, a production room is next to the conference room. It is where the DJ’s
edit their program such as commercials, which will air in the radio.
Nevertheless, the transmission of signal of program is from the DJ’s Booth to
Master’s control room then it will proceed to the transmitter antenna that is
located outside the building with a height of 100 meters.

 EQUIPMENT FUNCTIONS

1. Microphones- It is a device used in the FM booth to convert the sound

information from the DJ to electrical signal in order for the signal to be
compatible with the transmission channel. In this case, the transmission
channel is wire that connects the microphone to the console. This makes the
microphone to be one of the inputs in a console.

2. Computers- It also functions as one of the inputs in the console.

Nowadays, most of the FM broadcast station uses computer to store and
choose which music or commercial will be on air in the radio.

3. Telephones- It functions as a program in the console. It is where the calls

are dial to call someone outside the booth or calls are receive from the
listener. Then, the signal from the telephone is fed to the console to be one
of the inputs in the console.

8. Transmitter Antenna- The antenna works as

OVERALL OPERATIONAL SYSTEM
With all the inputs connected in the console, the DJ on duty will choose
which input will be switch on or air in the radio. To make this possible, the DJ
should use the console to air the program that he chooses. When the DJ
wishes to air two inputs then the mixer should be use. It is where two inputs
will be mixed together to be transmitted to the transmitter. Those are the
times that a background music is put on while the DJ is telling a story in the
radio. Then after the DJ has chosen his desired program, it will then proceed
to the limiter. Limiter allows signals below a specified input power or level to
pass unaffected while attenuating (lowering) the peaks of stronger signals
that exceed this threshold. After limiting the signal to secure a good signal
transmission. The signal will then proceed to the transmitter, wherein the
signal is modulated to be compatible with the transmission channel, amplified
and monitored. The transmission output power must be 5000 w. After going
into the transmitter, then the signal will proceed to the transmitter antenna
via a coaxial cable. The height of the transmitter antenna is 100 m from the
ground and has an output power of 5000 w.
