Introduction

Introduction

The purpose of this Operator Manual is to provide the descriptions and procedures
required to allow for safe and efficient use of the Kongsberg K-Chief 600 Power
Management System. A thorough understanding of system functions and controls
is necessary to optimise overall performance. Careful study of the information in
this manual is highly recommended, preferably while exploring the systems various
functions. System operation is a dynamic activity requiring regular adjustments and fine
tuning to achieve the best possible results under varying environmental conditions.
The manual includes the following main chapters:

Topics
• System description on page 9
– This chapter presents a general introduction to the K-Chief 600 Power Management
System.
• User interface on page 13
– This chapter contains information about the Power Management Systems interface
that may be a necessary supplement to the procedures.
• Operational procedures on page 22
– This chapter contains step-by-step procedures for operation of the K-Chief 600
Power Management System.
Note
The K-Chief 600 is a modular system, consisting of standard main units such as
Operator Stations, Operator Panels and processing and I/O units. For a specific project
configuration, the choice and quantities of items may vary and may depend on ship
and class.

Note
This manual only describes the operation of the Power Management System. For an
overall understanding of the K-Chief 600 system, please read the principal K-Chief
600 manual referenced below.

System description

Power Management
The Power Management System (PMS) is one of the systems that can be integrated in
the K-Chief 600. It is designed to control the power generation and distribution on board
the vessel. All the automatic functions necessary for a safe and economic operation is
included. The PMS is also designed according to class requirements.
The basic system consists of one Distributed Processing Unit (DPU) per generator unit.
Each DPU performs the control functions for the generator unit. The system is suitable
for generators driven by diesel engines, steam turbines or by the propeller shaft. The
DPUs have different configurations and control strategies depending on the type of
generator. For remote operation the DPUs are connected to an Operator Station (OS).
For the overall management of the switchboard an additional DPU, the Segment
Controller Unit (SCU) is used. The SCU gives redundancy both in function and
communication, this allows separation of local CAN from global CAN. The Power
Management System will be adapted to the specific configuration of generators and bus
bars on the ship. In order to comply with the latest rules of separation of functions for
alarm, control and safety, these functions have been addressed to separate DPUs. See the
following list for an overview.
• PMS control logic: SCU.
• Generator and circuit breaker control logic: A DPU (RIO-C4) for each generator.
• Bus-tie control logic: A DPU (RIO-C4) for each synchronizing circuit breaker.
• Generator protection system: A DPU (RIO-C3) for each generator.
• Alarms: A number of DPUs (RAi-16 and/or RDi-32 units) depending on the
configuration.
• Consumer Control logic: RioC2/RaO8
Operator interaction is done through interactive colour graphic pictures on the Operator
Stations (OS), or locally from the Touch panel. The number of images in the system
depends on the amount of equipment under K-Chief 600 control.

For a more in-depth description of the K-Chief 600 system see the K-Chief 600 Operator
Manual for Alarm and Monitoring System (document number 338857).

Generator types
The following types of generators can be operated:
• Diesel Generator
• Shaft Generator
• Turbine Generator
• Emergency Generator

Generator control functions

Synchronizing
The Power Management System automatically selects and synchronizes generators to
the net as required.

Frequency control and load sharing

All generators in Auto will work together to control the frequency and load sharing.
The frequency and load sharing is based on speed droop compensation. It has also the
possibility to interface governors in isochronous mode.

10 347694/C
System description

Asymmetric load sharing

The PMS has an asymmetric or unbalanced load sharing function. It will force one
generator to run at almost maximum load for a predefined period, while the second
generator is operating at a minimal load and fuel consumption. When the predefined
period expires, the generators will swap loads.

Symmetric load sharing

If asymmetric load sharing is not requested and two or more generators are running, the
load is shared equally between the generators.

Load-dependent start/stop of the stand-by generators

Each stand-by generator will automatically start, synchronise and connect according to
its assigned priority and whenever receiving one of the following requests:
• A switch-on request from the heavy consumer(s) if the generators in operation can not
provide enough power.
• A start request from another generator if it has developed a fault, which is preventing
it from maintaining its share of the load.
• A start request from another generator when it is approaching the point of overload.
Low load Auto-stop will be initiated when the total load is below a specified limit. It is
possible to override or block the low load Auto-stop feature. Whenever it is blocked,
the stand-by generator will keep on running, independent of the load parameters. This
feature is especially useful for variable heavy consumers (e.g. HPP, Thrusters).

Automatic start-and-connect after a power blackout

The power blackout logic is triggered when the PMS detects that all breakers are
disconnected and the line voltage is low (less than 10 % of normal). When a blackout
situation occur, the first stand-by generator will start and connect to the bus.

Supervision of heavy consumer start

The PMS has functionality to supervise the start of heavy consumers to ensure that a
start will not cause a blackout. If the demand for power exceeds the capacity of the
operating generators, the PMS will start up and connect a stand-by generator to ensure
that sufficient capacity is available before the request for start is granted.

Parallel operation between shaft generator and diesel generator

The frequency on the shaft generator (SG) is a result of the Main Engine (ME) speed,
and in most cases fixed. In this case it is normally the frequency of diesel generators
(DG) that is adjusted to synchronize the SG breaker. During normal operation the SG
is not a part of the stand-by system. Parallel operation of SG and DG is normally only
allowed for a limited time (adjustable) during load transfer.

347694/C 11
Kongsberg K-Chief 600

Standard setting
The generator which is connected first will be disconnected first, unless the SG and the
DG are connected to different bus bars. If they are connected to different bus bars, the
bus-tie breaker will be disconnected. See the following list for other options which
can be selected.
• Option 1: The generator which is connected first will be disconnected first, unless the
SG and the DG are connected to different bus bars. If they are connected to different
bus bars, the bus-tie breaker will be disconnected.
• Option 2: The SG will always be disconnected when a parallel situation occurs.
• Option 3: The DG will always be disconnected when a parallel situation occurs.
• Option 4: Continuous parallel operation of SG and DG is normally not recommended
and must be specified with the yard, the Main Switchboard Controller (MSB) and
the ME makers.

Auto modes/One Touch Auto Sequence

The MSB can be configured in several modes from the PMS view. In addition the PMS
can operate the MSB in several predefined Auto modes. For safe and quick change
of operation, the PMS handles all required reconfiguration of the MSB between the
different Auto modes.
Before a mode change is possible, three conditions must be fulfilled:
• All available generators are in Auto mode.
• The MSB and all the breakers are in remote control.
• The MSB must be configured in a defined mode.
When the modes are configured manually, the PMS will automatically detect the
different modes and give an indication of them in the view. The following list shows
some examples of modes.
• Harbour: One or more DGs is connected to the MSB depending on the load.
• Manoeuvre: One or more DGs connected depending on the load. The SG powers the
bow thruster bus only.
• Seagoing: The SG is connected to the MSB.
