Scouts earn some

wintertime badges
by Patti Scanlan
#2077 Troop Leader
Emergency Preparedness
is often approached from a
place of fear. Let’s face it, the
subject can be daunting and
scary. Many communities
do not understand the
leadership and other skills
that are an inherent part of
the Girl Scouting program
for both girls and adult
volunteers. Through our
badge and journey programs,

robotics, engineering and
more. Many of these badges/
skills are useful during an
emergency.
Recently, Girl Scouts
Troop #2077 which includes
girls from Nashua & Fort Peck
spent a day learning some
great emergency, winter, and
outdoor safety tips.
The girls started their day
learning to snow shoe. For
most, it was their first time
giving it a try!

Girl Scouts continued from front

They found out it isn’t as easy as it looks and takes
a lot of energy. Next they moved on to learning how to
safely keep and use pocket knives.
We moved forward with safety by discussing things
they need in an emergency (like a flood, tornado, etc)
including talking about how much food and water their
family needs. Discussion of places in and around their
home on where to get water in an emergency, they
were not thrilled to learn that their toilet holding tank
was one spot and that it takes a lot of snow to make
a little bit of water! We tried several different methods
for purifying water including boiling, bleach, and a
backpacking water filter.
After water, we moved on to food. The girls
discussed what types of food to keep on hand for an
emergency, knowing that they may not always be able
to cook. They also included talking about planning for
food for their pets. We tried some different freeze dried
foods, most liked the Chili Mac the best.
Talking about the Rule of Three’s—Humans can
survive three minutes without air, three hours, without
adequate shelter, three days without water, and three
weeks without food. We moved on to shelter. Luckily
for us we have had plenty of snow this year and the girls
broke into two groups and built quinzees (snow shelters).
They all said that was their favorite part of the day.
