“What’s The Matter?”

Exploring the different phases of matter through visual and hands-on
learning.
2nd Grade
30 Minutes
Learning outcomes:
1) Students will be able to distinguish between solids, liquids, and gasses.
2) Students can recognize the structure of atoms within solids, liquids, and
gasses.
3) Students will be able to list examples of each phase of matter.
Group Size: 20+ students
Supplies/Equipment/Materials Needed:
1) 3 clear containers
2) Styrofoam balls
3) Chocolate puff cereal
4) Atom worksheet
Lesson Plan:
MOTIVATION/INTRODUCTION: Begin by asking class “What’s the matter?” and
how they would normally respond to that question.
-Explain and walk through each phase of matter. Solids, liquids, and gasses.
-Have students talk with their neighbor and I will call randomly for students
to give me one example of whichever phase of matter I ask.
PROCEDURE:
-Discuss answers from introduction. Go through the PowerPoint lecture.
-Show students live example of the different atom structures within each
phase of matter (clear containers filled with foam balls).
ASSESSMENT:
-Pass out hands-on worksheet and cereal. Give each students a proper
amount to complete the worksheet. They will have to use to cereal to represent

each phase of matter. The students are free to eat the cereal afterwards.

Summary: We looked at and explored the different phases of matter through
visual and hands-on activities. Today, we learned about the different types, how
the particles work with each phase, and we discussed real world examples of each
phase of matter.
