Pipeline rehabilitation and strengthening for pressure pipes

TYFO® SYSTEMS

Pipe Strengthening for Pressure Pipelines

Water transmission pipes or force mains can be structurally
strengthened by wrapping either the outside of the pipe or the
inside (≥ 30-inch diameter). The design takes into account the
internal (i.e. operating, transient and vacuum pressures, thrust,
etc.) and external loads (i.e. soil, groundwater, traffic, etc.). Tyfo®
systems provide joint and transition zone waterproofing and protect
exposed concrete from abrasion decay and corrosion damage. New
pipe segments damaged in the field prior to installation can be
repaired using our system, which is much faster than conventional
solutions. Types of pipes we can protect include:

• PCCP • Ductile iron • Brick • Asbestos cement

• Steel • C303 • VCT • HDPE*
• Concrete • Cast iron • Fiberglass • PVC*

* Special detailing is required for these applications. External wrapping preferred.

Rehabilitation and Protection from Corrosion

Aggressive environments can lead to corrosion of reinforcing steel
and loss of strength. Tyfo® systems are designed to supplement Tyfo® Technical Envelope
the lost reinforcing steel in order to regain the original strength of
the element and, in some cases, provide additional capacity. The The Tyfo® Technical Envelope
unsound concrete must be removed and the exposed area should be Diameter range 30 inches and above
treated with Tyfo® CIS (corrosion inhibitor system). After an abrasive Effluent temperature up to 150˚ F
cleaning, the area can be repaired using conventional materials
Pressure up to 410 psi
approved by the engineer of record.
Soil depths 35 feet
After the area is properly repaired, the project-specific Tyfo® system Pipe condition Fully* or partially deteriorated
can then be installed to provide the required strengthening and Bends Yes
protection. Offset joints Yes
* Requires a reasonably uniform surface to apply Tyfo® systems.
Certifications and Testing Agencies
• AWWA design standards
• ANSI/NSF 61 certification
• ICC approved materials (ICC-ES ESR-2103)
• ASME PCC-2 certification
• Large-scale proof testing at third-party private laboratories
and university laboratories

Fyfe Company
Fyfe Company is the manufacturer of the Tyfo® system and a
subsidiary of Aegion Corporation, the parent company of Insituform.

Fyfe engineers work with pipeline owners and/or engineers of record

to define the relevant design parameters and then provide preliminary
Tyfo® system designs to Insituform's world class project management
team in order to determine a cost estimate for the project. Insituform Technologies, LLC
