INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:

Attempt only five questions from the following EIGTH numbers

All questions carry equal marks

Untidy work shall be penalised

Any kind of examination multi-practice shall lead to disqualification from the paper

1) a) Give any two differences in each case between a door frame and door lining

i) With aid of isometric neat sketches, illustrate how a door frame is fixed in
position at the following points:

a. Head

b. Intermediate part

c. Root

b) Using scale 1:2 and own standard dimension draw isometric exploded view of a gun
stock joint detail

ii) Why a gun stock joint is employed/adapted

2) a) With the aid of need sketches illustrate the effects of shrinkage in the following sawn
timber

i) Through and through

ii) Quarter sawn

b) With the aid of sketches and brief notes explain the following: -

i) Compartment kiln

ii) Progressive kill

c) Define the following: -

i) Natural – draught kiln

ii) Forced – draught kiln


d) With aid of any alternative design, illustrate how the effect of capillary can be overcome
between the window frame (wooden) and its shutters

3) Fig. 1 shows a line diagram of more than half span for T.D.A roof truss

a) List any five requirements for a good formwork

b) Fig III shows a vertical section of a reinforced concrete retaining wall to be cast in situ,
standing on an existing concrete base.

i) Draw the section ands the necessary timber work to support the wet concrete

iii) Name two release agents which may be used to prevent adhesion of concrete to
formwork
6) State

a) At least three purposes of a site hoarding

b) Make a neat sketch to illustrate a section through

ii) for a climbing formwork

c) What is a kicker wall? Explain with aid of sketch.

7) a) Define the following

i) Dry rot

ii) Wet rot

b) Outline the characteristics of wet rot

c) Identify any five areas where wet rot is likely to develop

d) With aid of neat sketches illustrate a suitable formwork (cross section) for a suspended
concrete floor

8) Five staff quarters are required to be constructed at St. Joseph’s Technical Institute Kisubi.
The designed intended roof truss structure frame is shown in fig 4 and each house is to take
up four trusses

The house external measurements are 10 m by 6 m, the roof pitch is 300 and struts are 1.2m long,
eaves and verges overhang 0.6m

a) From the information provided

i) Prepare a cutting list to the required work

ii) Calculate the total metre run for that work


iii) If you are asked to include 10% waste for allowance, how many metre runs would
be needed for the same job. Note; the timber sizes are applied

b) Why do you think a cutting list would be important before one started work?
