REUSE, REDUCE, AND RECYCLE

The level of environmental degradation is one of the important factors determining the
high disaster risk in an area, especially in archipelagic countries like Indonesia. World Risk
Reports recorded during 2002 to 2011, there have been 4,130 disasters worldwide that resulted in
more than 1 million deaths and material losses reaching US $ 1.195 trillion. The World Risk
Report also creates a World Risk Index that raises 173 countries based on the risk of becoming a
disaster victim as a result of natural disasters.
This shows that the living creature in particular is the party who always utilize the
environment, both in terms of respiration, food needs, boards and others. And, humans as the
most superior creatures in the ecosystem, have the power in creating and consuming various
natural resources for the necessities of life. Environmental damage is also dominated by garbage
that can not be fully processed by the people of Indonesia. Therefore, there needs to be
awareness from the community to prevent the increase of environmental damage.
The implementation of 3R (Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle) systems is one of the solutions
in maintaining the environment around us that is cheap and easy to do in addition to processing
waste into compost or utilizing waste to be a source of electricity (Waste Power Generation). In
addition, the implementation of 3R can also be done by everyone in their daily activities. 3R
consists of Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle. Reuse means reusing waste that can still be used for the
same function or other functions. Reduce means reducing everything that results in waste. And
Recycle means reprocessing (recycling) garbage into new goods or useful products.
