The Mysterious Periodic Table of Elements

Elements as Building Blocks

The periodic table is organized like a big grid.

Each element is placed in a specific location because of its
atomic structure. As with any grid, the periodic table has
rows (left to right) and columns (up and down). Each row
and column has specific characteristics. For exam-
ple, beryllium (Be) and magnesium (Mg) are found in col-
umn two and share certain similarities while potassium (K)
and calcium (Ca) from row four share different characteris-
tics.

Competency of Grade 7 Science for First Quarter
“recognizes that substances are classified into elements
and compounds”. Specifically, you will:
 familiarize the layout of the periodic table;
 Cite and write the name of common elements using
symbol or vis-à-vis; and
 know some information about the elements that may

the number of protons present
in the element. For example, if
Hydrogen has 1 as its atomic
number, it means it has
1 proton inside it.
