Statement of the Problem

This study sought to find out the effects of participation in competitive sports on school
connectedness among students.

The central issue that drives this study is the relationship between academic performance and
athletic participation. The background section of this chapter revealed 8 that there are a number of
different conclusions drawn from various studies regarding the impact that athletics has been reported to
have on academic performance.

This study was created to determine the academic status of Senior High school students, one
group being those who chose to fulfill their athletic eligibility and the other group that chose not to
pursue college athletics.
Significance of the study

This study sought to establish the effect of participation in competitive sports on school
connectedness among senior high school students.

For these students, academics and athletics complemented and reinforced one another. In fact,
some student athletes actually did better academically when their sport was in season, and reported that
the time and energy demanded by athletics provided the incentive to become more focused and efficient.
Improved brain attributes associated with regular physical activity. The athletic-academic relationship in
the university setting has historically been problematic. It is unclear whether that relationship is similarly
problematic at the high school level. One such problem has been the assumption that sports are anti-
intellectual.

A study of the effect of athletics on academics of SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL students was
important for several reasons. First, the study examined the factors involved that affect the academic
performance of the student athletes. Studies have shown that time and energy are both required for good
performance in sports and in studies. There must be proper time management that helps to manage the
studies and extra activities as well. The analysis has helped to add to the literature and refine the
concepts.

Further, the investigation into the relationship between in season and out of season academic
performance among athletes will provide a guide for further research in this area in order to continue to
contribute to the literature beyond what was directly assessed in this study. The key terms used
throughout the study will now be defined and discussed as they have been used previously in the
literature.

Why do sports benefit students?

Are athletes healthier than non-athletes?

Do sports affect academics?

Do extracurricular activities improve grades? What are the benefits of being an athlete?

Objectives of the Study

The study was guided by the following objectives. To establish the effect of gender on school
connectedness of athletes and no athletes ii. To find out the effect of age on school connectedness of
athletes and nonathletic iii. To determine the effects of class on school connectedness of athletes and no
athletes

Delimitations

There are many factors that could influence school connectedness such as peer relations, school
disciplinary policies and practices, school guidance and counselling programmers and opportunities for
talent development, but the study considered only the effects of participation in competitive sports on
school connectedness.

Conceptual Framework

The goal of the study was to determine the effects of participation in competitive sports on school
connectedness.

Commitment to sport activities (Independent Variable)

Time spent on sport activities (Independent Variable)

School connectedness (Dependent Variable)

Limitations of the Study

This research study describes and analyzes the perceptions and experiences of selected student
athletes.

Those students' who chose not to fulfill their academic status at the MSU-N SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MSU
will affect this research.
