Solvent selection criteria for extractive distillation ( brief then cosmo rs metheollgy)
Vapour liquid equilibrium – method of selection of ionic liquid as solven(class or type of ionic liquid)
Hyperbranched polymers: This class of solvents are highly branched, polydisperse, threedimensional
macromolecules. Their applications are based on the non-volatility associated with these polymers
and the large number of functional groups that are attached to the molecule, allowing for tailoring
of their physical and thermodynamical properties. The hyperbranched polymers have been mainly
studied in the separation of the polar mixtures, e.g. ethanol-water and tetrahydrofuran-water, by
means of extractive distillation and solvent extraction, respectively. However, there are only a few
hyperbranced polymers commercially available at present which meet the requirements of an
entrainer or solvent (large scale availability, low viscosity, low melting temperatures, stability,
selectivity and capacity) [18]. As a remark, hyperbranched polymers applied to extractive distillation
process are out of the scope of this work and just few words will be devoted to these components
mostly comparing them with ILs, taking data from the literature.
Ionic liquid can be categorized as a hyperbranched polymer. This type of entrainer is highly
branched, polydisperse and three-dimensional macromolecules. This polymer has unique
characteristic and the most attractive characteristic of it is that it is non-volatile. Besides that, this
type of polymer has a lot of fuctional group which makes it very suitable of becoming a solvent
instead of using conventional solvent.
