December 2015 Semester End Main Examinations
Course: Control Engineering Duration: 3 hrs
Course Code: 12ME7DCCOE Max Marks: 100

Date: 16.12.2015
Instructions: Answer five full questions selecting one question from each unit.

UNIT 1

1. a) Define control system. Briefly explain any three requirements of a feedback control 05
system.
b) Indicate any five differences between open loop control system and closed loop 05
control system.
c) Show that the systems in figure 1a and figure 1b are analogous. 10

UNIT 2
2. a) Find the equivalent transfer function G(s) = C(s)/R(s), for the system shown in 10
figure 2a.

Fig 2.(a)
b) Find the transfer function of the signal flow graph shown in fig2b, using Mason’s 10
rule.

3. a) Find the natural frequency, damping ratio, settling time, rise time, peak time and 10
percentage overshoot of the system with transfer function 100/(s2+15s+100).

b) Determine the number of right half plane poles in the closed loop transfer function 10
G(s) = 10/ (s5+7s4+6s3+42s2+8s+56) using Routh-Hurwitz method. Comment on the
stability.

UNIT 3
4. A feedback control system has open loop transfer function 20
( ) ( )
( )( )
Sketch the Root locus plot and calculate the range of value K for stability.

UNIT 4
5. a) The open loop transfer function of a unity feedback system is given by 10
( ) .
( )( )
Sketch the polar plot and determine the gain margin & phase margin.

b) For a feedback control system, ( ) ( ) . For this system, find 10

( )( )
gain margin and stability from Nyquist Plot.

6. A ship's roll can be stabilized with a control system. A voltage applied to the fins' 20
actuators creates a roll torque that is applied to the ship. The ship, in response to the
roll torque, yields a roll angle. Assuming the block diagram for the roll control
system to be as shown in the Fig 6.a, from Bode plots, determine the gain and phase
margins for the system.

UNIT 5

7. a) Determine the transfer function G(s) = Y(s)/U(s) for an RLC circuit described by the 10
state and output equations:

[ ̇] [ ][ ] [ ]

[ ][ ]

b) Explain the concept of controllability and observability. Comment about the 10

controllability of the system represented by the state equation:
