1. Valve Leak Inspection using Acoustic Emission

1.1. Background

M3 has scheduled for valve leaks inspection program for identification the integrity of operated valve
during on-stream condition. Condition verification by AFCM was done during normal operated process
with pressure in active. The detection of leaks was used by the technology of acoustic emission.

2. Leaks Identification Criterion

The test method for this inspection will be carried out using an acoustics sensor which will be held in
contact with a flat surface, using a suitable couplant, on the valve to be tested. The signal level which
display in monitor is noted (dB).
The establish location of valves information such in details as per described below is obtained for
analysis purposes:

a) Gasses: Valve I.D., Differential Pressure (bar), Inlet Size (Inches), valve type gate/ball/other. (for
tons/year you also need density at atmospheric pressure, STP).

b) Liquids: As above, pressure must be >3 bar for liquids, laminar flow is not quantified, so ensure
valve is “closed”, or significant underestimation results.

The most fundamental is to ensure valves to be measured are FULLY CLOSED and subject
to DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE.

4. Findings and Analysis

4.1. Total Valve Scanning : 19/26

4.2. Total Valve Passing : 8

BDV2613 and BDV2234 cannot be quantify due to insufficient valve details such as size, class
and pressure different.

All passing valves are recommended for replacement or sealing during next outage.
