CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted in University of Eastern

Philippines, particularly in the College of Business

Administration (CBA). The college is presently offering

business related courses such as BS Accountancy, BS Business

Administration major in Management, BS Business

Administration major in Marketing, BS Business Economics, BS

in Cooperatives, BS Entrepreneurship, and BS Hotel and

Restaurant Management degrees.

The researchers choose the College of Business

Administration as the locale of the study. It is for the

reason that, CBA is the only institution in Northern Samar

that offers Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship, from

where the respondents of this research came from. Another

reason is that it will be easier for them to gather data,

since that the researchers are also part of the aforementioned

college.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive-correlational

method as the research design for it aims to determine the

relationship between the profile of the respondents and the

factors that influence the Bachelor of Science in

Entrepreneurship to become entrepreneurs. It is descriptive

because it describes the relationship of the independent and

dependent variables .It is correlational because it will try

to find out the relationships that exist between the students

profile and factors that influence the Bachelor of Science in

Entrepreneurship to become entrepreneurs.

Research Variables

This study has two variables, the independent and the

dependent variables. Independent variables consist of the

profile of the respondents and the factors which influence

the students to become entrepreneurs. These are the

independent variables because they are the cause, influence,

or which affects the outcomes. Dependent variables are the

students taking up B.S entrepreneurship. They are the

dependent variables because they depend on the independent

25

variables. They are the outcomes or results of the influence

of the independent variable.

The variables under the profile of the respondents are

sex, age and factors. It will identify if there is a

relationship between the respondents profile and the students

of B.S. Entrepreneurship. Another variable are the factors

which affects the students to become entrepreneurs. It will

identify if it really influence the students to become

entrepreneurs. Another variable also is the significant

relationship between the demographic profile of the

respondents and the factors which influence the students to

become entrepreneurs.

Population and Sampling

The population of the study came from the College of

Business Administration, particularly the students of B.S.

Entrepreneurship.

This research employed the lottery method of sampling

method in getting the respondents/samples. It is a method of

creating a simple random sample which is exactly what it

sounds like. Here, the researchers randomly picks numbers,

with each number corresponding to a subject or item; in order

26

to create the sample. The researchers ensure that the numbers

are well mixed before selecting the sample. A total of 69

students among 84 students from B.S. entrepreneurship during

2017-2018 will be included in the study.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study were the B.S

entrepreneurship students of college of business

administration. The total population of Entrepreneurship

students is 84. Using the sloven formula wherein N is the

total number of population over 1 plus the total number of

population N multiply by the margin of error with a value of

5% raised to 2, the total sample that the researchers got is

sixty-nine (69) students for the school year 2017-2018.

Research Instruments

The research instrument of this study includes a survey

questionnaire that has two parts. The first part is about the

profile of the respondents, in which the researchers will

identify if there is a significant relationship between the

factors and the respondents. Next part of the survey

questionnaires is the factors of entrepreneurship which

27

influences the students of B.S. Entrepreneurship to Become

Entrepreneurs.

Scoring and Interpretation of Data

In order to recognize the result of social networking to

the grade nine students, the pursuing scoring will be used.

From the following choices:

1. Profile of the respondents in terms of work experience:

5 – Without experience

4 – Less Experience

3 – Experienced

2 – More Experienced

1 – Well Experienced

2. Factors of Entrepreneurship that compels the students of

B.S. Entrepreneurship to Become Entrepreneurs

Scale Means Interpretation

5 4.20-5.0 - Strongly Agree

4 3.40-4.19 - Agree

3 2.60-3.39 - Uncertain
28

2 1.80-2.59 - Disagree

1 1.0-1.79 - Strongly Disagree

Validation of Research Instrument

The research instrument which the researchers used in

this study was already validated. The researchers adapted the

questionnaire from the study entitled,” FACTORS AFFECTING

STUDENTS’ ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTIONS OF POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE

OF SETUBAL: A COGNITIVE APPROACH” It is a study made in other

country. With this, the researcher see if there were some

further improvement after conducting the questionnaire to the

respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step that the researchers do in gathering the

data is to ask for the permission of the school head or head

of the institution. This will be done through writing a letter

of consent or permission. Then the next step is to distribute

the survey questionnaire to the selected respondents. After

answering the questionnaires, the researchers will get this

and start to analyse the gathered data. They will be

tabulating the results of the study. After that the

29

researchers will interpret this. The last step will be giving

the conclusions from the interpreted data’s.

Statistical Treatment

The statistical tests employed in this study were the

frequency counts, weighted mean, and multiple regression

analysis. This determines the test of relationship between

the respondents profile and the factors of entrepreneurship.

The mean was used to determine the number of the students who

answered the questionnaire. The percentage was used to

determine the percent of the frequency. In order to test the

relationship between the variables multiple regression

analysis was used.

Frequency and Percentage - It is the number of times the

observation occurs in the data. The distribution of a

variable is the pattern of frequencies of the observation.

This was used to determine the percentage of the respondents

that falls on high, average, and low scores. It was used to

determine the number of observations that lie above (or below)

a particular value.
30

Weighted Mean. This was used to determine the factors

that influence B.S. Entrepreneurship students to become

entrepreneurs.

Multiple Regression Analysis. It is a statistical process

for estimating the relationships among variables. It includes

many techniques for modelling and analysing several

variables, when the focus is on the relationship between

an independent variable and one or more dependent variables .

More specifically, regression analysis helped one understand

how the typical value of the dependent variable changes when

any one of the independent variables is varied, while the

other independent variables are held fixed. This was used to

determine the relationship between the profile of the

respondents and the factors that influence B.S.

Entrepreneurship students to become entrepreneurs.
