Assignment No. 2

1. A single degree of freedom system consists of a mass, m1 and a spring of stiffness, k1 has
the natural frequency, f1. If an additional spring of stiffness, k2 is attached to the same
system, in parallel to the spring, k1, then the natural frequency increases by 30 %.
Calculate the value of k2 in terms k1.

2. A fixed beam of 5 m span carries a weight of 100 kN at the centre of span. The width of
beam is 500 mm and depth is 120 mm. Calculate the natural frequency and time period of
the system. Consider modulus of elasticity as 200 Gpa.

3. A free vibration test is performed on a single degree-of-freedom system. The lumped

weight of the system is 1200 kN which is displaced by 10 cm and suddenly released. The
time required to complete 15 cycles of oscillations is 5 s. Calculate the stiffness of the
system. Write the equation of motion for the system and calculate the displacement
after 10 sec. Consider initial velocity as 2 cm/sec.

4. A single degree of freedom system consists of a mass 1000 kg and stiffness of 55000 N/m.
Consider the initial displacement of 0.1 m and initial velocity of 1.5 m/sec. Plot the
response of the system for 5 seconds by taking time interval of 0.05 sec.
