Reading Remediation Program

One of the most essential skills a child needs to develop is his ability to
read. Studies show that a child who engages in early reading becomes more
productive individuals as they grow older. In line with this, schools have always
seen the important role of reading in developing a child holistically. School
administrators and teachers try to seek different ways on how to help the
learners in honing their reading skills.

Since reading is considered vital in the cognitive development of a child,

teachers pay so much attention to it, but due to the limited number of minutes
allotted for each subject, teachers designed an extension of the class hours
which focused on reading alone. Pupils who find difficulty in reading are
undergoing remediation. Reading remediation of the grade one teachers seeks
to provide the needed help to further enhance the skill of their learners.

Before the remediation started, the first month of the school year was
spent by assessing the reading readiness and abilities of the grade one pupils
and to identify which of the pupils for each class needs to undergo the
program. After identifying who the clientele will be, the teachers chose the
appropriate methods and strategies, as well as the reading materials suited for
the learners.

For the first month, the teacher focused on the familiarization of the letter
sounds which eventually led to the combination of sounds or syllabication. With
the learners having mastery over the letter sounds and syllables, reading words
became better and easier as the remediation goes on.

After months of remediation, significant developments have been cited.

Pupils who at first find difficulty in reading tend to become more comfortable
and at ease dealing not just with simple words but with sentences and some
stories.
