Adaptive and Inert Culture

Organizational culture includes an organization’s expectations,
experiences, philosophy, as well as the values that guide
member behavior, and is expressed in member self-image,
inner workings, interactions with the outside world, and future
expectations. Culture is based on shared attitudes, beliefs,
customs, and written and unwritten rules that have been
developed over time and are considered valid.

Zappos

Zappos has become almost as

well known for its culture as it
is for the shoes that it sells
online. What does that culture
look like?
Advantages
● An adaptive culture, allows
businesses to be able to adjust to
the changes in their external
environment
● The workforce tends to feel more
appreciated in an adaptive culture,
which makes them motivated.
● This culture allows diversity and
unique perspectives on a situation.
Disadvantages ● Some workers may procrastinate
on their assignments because they
are afraid to embrace the creative
side of the process.
● Each worker must be personally
motivated to be productive. This
may not be possible for some
employees
Inert cultures
Inert cultures are those
that lead to values and
norms that fail to
motivate or inspire
employees. They lead to
stagnation and often
failure over time.
