How safe are our children ?

Roshan Nauhria, President, New
Zealand Peoples Party (NZPP) along
with Anil Sharma, General Secretary,
NZPP have condemned the murder
of Grace Milane. Grace Milane was a
British tourist whose disappearance in
Auckland, New Zealand, in December
2018 received international attention.
A 26-year-old man was charged with
her murder on 8 December, and her
body was found in a nearby forest park
the following day.
The party President Roshan Nauhria
said, “I strongly condemn the murder
of Grace Milane which is not the only
incident of a gruesome murder in
New Zealand in the past. The rate of
crime has been rising steadily in New
Zealand. Although it is heartening to
see the support that the family has
received online, but there is nothing
that can compensate the loss of the
life of a young child for the parents.
New Zealand must put a lid on this
behaviour.”
Anil Sharma said, “I am saddened
by the huge loss not just for Grace’s
family but for New Zealand on the
whole. We have shown our grief and
solidarity towards the unfortunate
event. But lighting up Auckland's
Sky Tower to mark her death and
candlelight vigils at several locations
around New Zealand may not be
enough, we have to take measures to
ensure that not just locals but also
visitors and tourists are equally safe in
the country.”
He said, “I am deeply saddened by this
loss and the hard truth is that it can
happen to anyone. We have children
who may be the target of similar
crime. Our children may not be safe."
“My appeal to all the people and
in particular the government, is
to create awareness about these
incidents by using different channels
including social media. For parents it
is advisable to talk to their children,
teenage kids in particulars about the
perils related to the present situation
of crime", added Anil.
“I do agree that this is a phenomenon
that is not limited to particular area or
group of people, but I also understand
that a lot of crime is happening under
the influence of drugs and alcohol
and it is hard to determine a set of
substance abusers and individuals

“NZ is considered a safe country and
has an incredibly good name in the
area of tourism. It stands tall in this
competitive industry across the globe
and we need to safe guard this image.
That is our moral right and duty as

Millane's death generated an
unprecedented reaction from the New
Zealand public. It is heartening to see
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern who
made a public apology to the family
of Millane, saying "on behalf of New
Zealand, I want to apologise. Your
daughter should have been safe here,
and she wasn't".
But this is an overall disappointing
situation, and it is also a terrifying
reality. These perpetrators of crime
are people who live among us with a
masked common man’s appearance.

English Courses at Takanini Family
Service Centre will help beginners learn
English language, English writing and
Maths skills for everyday life, study or
work.
A new Course facilitated by The
Manukau Institute of Technology
was started by the Takanini Family
Service Centre which has received an
overwhelmingly positive response from
the local residents.
It is an 18-week course run over two
terms. Most of the students enrol for
two semesters and also continue the
following year. These classes at Takanini
are very popular and they usually consist
of a batch of about 20 students.
The learners are taught about everyday
life in New Zealand, through their
bilingual tutor Navdeep Sharma.
Each learner has a different goal. It
might be to find employment, to feel
confident to talk to their children or
grandchildren’s teachers or something
else that is important to them. A lot
of these enthusiastic new learners just
want to be able to understand how to
communicate in everyday situations.
One of their students has now found
employment which he contributes to
attending these English classes. He
learnt interview techniques through this
course and how to apply for a job. Most
importantly he gained confidence in
using English.
The Takanini Family Service Centre is
a place for people to feel accepted and
connected to their community. They aim
to be inclusive, so they embrace diversity
and encourage acceptance. They want
people to feel they can participate in
their community with English language
being fundamental to feeling included.
With the current response, MIT will be
conducting the same course again in
February 2019, at Takanini and also at
the Balmoral Temple.

residents are travelling away over this

year make sure that you have someone
to look after you home, or make sure you
have taken necessary steps to increase
security over this time.

look vacant and enticing for burglars to
target.
• Have a neighbour or a friend clear you
letterbox regularly.
• Let your neighbours’ park their
vehicles in your drive to give the
impression people are still around.
• Put lights and radios on timers
• Do not close all your blinds and
curtains as this will let criminals know
that you have gone away.
• Do not leave a message on your
answer phone or voicemail that you are
on holiday or have gone away.
• Do not post on social media holiday
plans as many criminals use social
media to troll for victims
• Considering having an alarm installed
and having it monitored.
• If you are intending on going
away leave your emergency contact
information with your neighbours.
You should also take care when leaving
empty boxes outside your home that
may give away details of new and
valuable items that may have purchased
over Christmas.

Sindhi Culture Day, Auckland, NZ 2018
Sindh is one of Pakistan's four provinces,
located in the south. Also known as
“Mehran” as well as “Indus Valley”,
Sindh has a rich culture, history and
language. Sindhis, the people of Sindh,
date back to the original inhabitants
of ancient Sindh, who are believed to
have lived through the Indus Civilisation
around the 5000 BC. The organiser said,
"Sindhis, are kind-hearted, cordial and
welcoming people. The Sindhi "Topi" and
"Ajrak" are symbols of Sindhi nationalism
for hundreds of years.
The ‘Sindhi Culture Day’ has been
celebrated in the Sindh province for
many years. However, in recent years,
this has only been officially recognised
by the state's individual party and
since then the “Sindhi Culture Day” has
become an annual event in Sindh and
abroad.
This year, it became the first time ever
for "Sindhi Culture Day" celebrations
to be held in New Zealand. It was
celebrated on 15th December 2018 at
Aotea Square in Auckland, New Zealand.
The initiative to celebrate “Sindhi
Culture Day” event was organized by

PANEL DISCUSSION on proposed rental
law changes generates momentum

The Indian News organised a Panel
Discussion on the proposed rental
law reforms and heating standards at
Balmoral Community Hall, in Balmoral,
Auckland on 9th December 2018.
Invites were sent to the Government,
the Housing Minister, Labour Party,
National Party, ACT Party, tenant
advocacy groups, landlord associations
and the Event was publicised s that
all concerned could participate and
voice their views. No such open public
forum had been organised by either
the Government, any political party
or any media on this topic of great
importance to almost everyone. The
Labour Party and the Government were
unable to send any representative while
representatives from national Party and
ACT Party attended.
The event was a well-attended event,
with over 75 people coming to hear
the panellists and give their views. The
Panel discussion was moderated by Paul
Davies, a real estate consultant and the
panellists were-Ms Angela Maynard,
Tenants’ Protection Association,
Auckland, Mr Mike Butler, Founder
STOP the war on tenancies, Ms Agnes
Lohini, National Party candidate for
Mangere, Auckland, Mr. Stephen Berry,
ACT Party candidate, Mr. Naveen Goel,
Lawyer and property investor.

myself welcomed the panellists and
the audience, gave a brief introduction
about the Indian News, as we are one of
the youngest but fast growing fortnightly
Indian community newspapers and

ground rules for the panel discussion

the present Residential Tenancies Act
(RTA) was about to be introduced
but the RTA has not killed the rental
business. It was natural to fear change.
She dealt with a lot of tenants and in
her view, we needed to change the
culture around renting which was not
at all favourable to tenants, we needed
to stop treating renters as second-class
citizens. The Healthy Homes Guarantee
Act was a good thing and only bad
landlords should fear the proposed
changes. Mike Butler Founder of Stop
the War on Tenancies questioned the
very basis of the discussions document
issued by the Government for the
Healthy Homes Guarantee Act. As per
him, the discussion document based its
presumption that a healthy temperature
was 18 C for most people (20C for
elderly and children) on a World Health
standard but when one looks at the

caters to, will lose their houses as they
will not be able to pay the increased
rents. More evictions would happen with
the proposed laws. It was better for low
income families to have a cold home
rather than have no home at all.

problem. The overwhelming view in the
Hall was that the government had gone
overboard with the proposed reform,
this would only scare away investors,
increase the shortage of houses,
harm the lower end tenants, lead to
increased rents and the law, which
was already tilted in tenants’ favour
was being unfairly titled even further
in their favour. Although the time for
submissions had closed, the audience
was urged to keep writing their concerns
to their MPs and to the Housing Minister
and not to give up.
The event ended with a vote of thanks
from The Editor with a promise to
hold more such events in future. Some

New Zealanders is one of the things that

heard that Police Minister Stuart Nash
had axed our plan to have 95 per cent
of all New Zealanders living within
25 kilometres of a 24/7 police station.
This would have helped make our
communities safer, yet this Government
has decided it’s not a priority.
In 2017 the National Government
invested an additional $503 million
dollars into policing and justice, and
we pledged to put more Police on the
front line. We wanted the community
and those who want to offend against
it to see more Police on the street,
helping people to feel safe and ensuring
offenders knew there was a higher
chance they would be caught.
Part of the reason we set targets like our
24/7 policing one was this meant we
were held accountable for our results.
This Government is running from that
accountability. They don’t want you to

rural bases in Southland and Tasman,
Wanaka, Wellsford, Wairoa, Rolleston,
Taumarunui, Te Kuiti, Thames,
Dannevirke/Waipukurau, Dargaville,
Stratford, Motueka, and Marton will no
longer get 24/7 Police bases.
These are small towns, rural towns and
tourist hotspots. Why should Kiwis
have less protection and be less safe just
because of where they choose to live? We
need people to work in farming, to boost
our small towns and work in hospitality
to support our busy tourism industry.
Why would we then make these places
less safe?
We believe all New Zealanders should
be safe and secure and able to rely on
our Police when they need them, day or
night. I’d encourage Stuart Nash to visit
these 17 communities to explain to them
in person why they are more likely to

A lighter version of the Indian takeaway classic from Angela Nilsen,
this tomato-based curry is packed with extra spinach and peppers.
Serves 6
• 450g skinless, boneless chicken breast, • 2½ cm-piece ginger, grated
cut into bite-sized pieces • ½ tsp turmeric
• 1 tbsp lime juice • 1 tsp ground cumin

In most parts of the world the period
sometime late December to early
January is ‘holiday time’.
One may ask ‘But why holiday
this time of the year? ‘. It is easy
to fathom why as we traditionally
know Christmas Day is on the 25th
of December to celebrate the birth
of Jesus Christ. Some critics may
argue on the date as being imposed
upon us, but the significance of
Christmas is the day Jesus was born
and it brings a load of good tidings
and good actions associated with
it. It also symbolizes a very deeply
significant truth of the spiritual
life as Jesus Christ is the very
personification of Divinity.
Christmas season is the magnificent
time of the year when we greet
people from our hearts wishing
one another joy, peace, happiness
and prosperity. Christmas Day is
followed by New Year where we
greet each other with ‘A Happy and
Prosperous New Year’
What’s so significant about
Christmas and the birth of
Christ?
As deduced from scripture, Jesus
Christ was born at a time when
ignorance, superstition, greed,
hatred and hypocrisy prevailed upon
the land. Human values and purity
were forgotten and morality was
neglected. This resulted in a gap
and a fundamental alienation from
God. This became a separation so
profound that God had to intervene
to overcome it and hence sent his
only son in the form of man to save
us. The Incarnation, the Word
becoming flesh, is considered God's
action to right this original wrong.
Redemption, then, is basically
understood as a "buying back” by
God. (Funny enough, while I pen my
thoughts this moment on paper for
this article, a questions pops into my
mind ‘Are we seeing a repeat of these
traits again now?’).
Wonderfully to day in this wonderful
world, Christmas is not only
celebrated by Christians who believe
in deep faith about Jesus and his
birth, but by billions of people from
all faiths & beliefs. Because the very
birth, life, death and resurrection
of Jesus make up the foundation
of Christianity, the Christian
community has long reflected on
their significance for our lives. What
was the purpose of Jesus' life? The
answer most frequently handed on is
redemption of mankind from sin.
What does Christmas mean to
New Zealanders?
New Zealanders ‘Just what does
Christmas mean to New Zealanders
in 2006 – and what do we treasure
most? The majority of those
surveyed said they felt ‘good’ about
Christmas, while 38% said they felt
‘excited’. A third of those surveyed
were not particularly bothered; 10%
said they felt apprehensive, and 3%
admitted that Christmas made them
feel lonely.
To the question ‘Where would
you prefer to spend Christmas?’,
most replied ‘at home with close
family, extended family or family
and friends’. Nearly two-thirds
felt that the very best thing about
Christmas is spending time with
family and friends. While the
religious importance of Christmas
is respected, its focus has shifted
to a family day. New Zealand,
unlike many other cultures,
doesn’t have a day set aside for
family celebration. According to
social demographer Bernard Salt,
Christmas has increasingly become
a sort of National Family day for New
Zealanders
The story of Christmas begins
with the birthday of Jesus.
The life of Jesus Christ, as seen
from a Christian point of view, is an
epitome of suffering, of good times
and of bad. When he came into
the world, he came as a child but
was a King. As a new born babe he
had to hide and run to avoid death
by a decree given by Herod to kill
every new male child born at that
time. This was jealousy at its peak.
Imagine, yes take moment, and
imagine this actually happening and
the anguish and trauma his parent
Mary and Joseph went through.
Imagine a king being born in a stable
not in a palace nor a private room in
a hospital. The owner of the stable,
who willingly gave it to them, is an
example of kindness which we can
imbibe and make it a habit in our
dealings in everyday life, at home,
our work place or while commuting.
It’s the small thing that count. That’s
the message of Christmas.
Christmas Parties, Christmas
Dinner and Turkey, Christmas
tree, Christmas decorations, the
Christmas Gifts, the joy of Santa and
Santa Parades, Christmas Carols
and Christmas Balls or Dances are
all welcome and definitely love to
have all of these. What we need
to practically remember is that
we should not make Christmas an
expensive and lavish affair but one
with more quality time with family,
friends and with humanity at large.
This is the time where Family comes
together for sharing and caring.
Thus in the true spirit of Christmas,
we must remember that the main
reason for the season is the birth of
Jesus Christ.
Christmas
Put those verbal greetings into
perpetual and permanent action. As
B C Forbes suggests;
“Christmas is a tonic for our souls.
It moves us to think of others rather
than of ourselves. It directs our
thoughts to giving.”
It is indeed easy as a social ritual to
wish everyone a Happy Christmas,
or Happy New Year or in recent and
more liberal connotations, Happy
Holidays (a form of expression
that does not appeal to me as it
being a fall out from celebrating the
birthday of Jesus). In context these
facilitations should be felt in spirit,
mind and body. Don’t make this a
lip service but do so by meaningfully
putting this into actions of kindness,
caring and as part of our personal
contribution in making the world a
better place. Yes you and I can do
this. We can make the world a better
place. Let’s start by respecting
each other in whoever they are and
in whatever their beliefs are. No
religions teaches us wrong things.
Religion is an important facet of life
and they act as milestones as we
journey through life. It’s we humans
who can misinterpret and use
religion for our selfish ends.
In conclusion let’s wish each other a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year. Let us resolve to get into real
action of caring for one another.

State election BJP rout
- Lessons to learn before the 2019 big fight
I
n just concluded elections in five states of India, Bhartiya Janta Party and
Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been given a big jolt by the people of
three of its ruling states, two of which were ruled since last three terms. It’s
not that BJP didn’t expect a tough fight but still hoped to sail it through using
Modi charisma as it has worked so far for the party. Despite the debacle of BJP,
the results have not been too bad in terms of numbers or the percentage of the
votes received by both the parties. In fact, in two major states of Rajasthan and
Madhya Pradesh, they shared exact equal percentage of votes and in MP the
fight went till the count of last vote with BJP losing it by a whisker.
If these results are any indicators of people’s mood, then it is a sign of warning
for BJP for the 2019 general elections. Today, the people of India want to
see quick fix solution of all the problems. As even seventy years after the
independence there are lots of basic issues which have not been dealt with, in
a sustainable manner or have not addressed at all by the successive regimes
hence the expectations are hitting the roof. What has not been done in 70
years’ time, people want to see it happen in seventy months or seventy weeks
without making any extra efforts from their end. Not many people(including
his own party’s) are appreciative of Modi’s initiatives of making India
corruption free as the corruption now flows in the blood of an average Indian.
Also, two very historic and bold decisions of Modi, of demonetisation and
implementation of GST as one tax system in country, however good it may
be for the country in future, people at large didn’t accept it. It created a lot of
confusions and inconvenience for people for some time and opposition parties
didn’t leave any opportunity spare, to exploit this situation and adding fuel to
the fire. Modi’s bold decisions were hailed and upheld by world organisations
like IMF and the World Bank and all major economies of the world. All the
apprehensions and doubts of economy slowing down and GDP falling, were
proved wrong in successive financial years results, but people did not find it
enough. A common man only knows one measurement of a good work done
and that is how much money comes to his pocket. It is very unfortunate
though, as ideally the national interest should always stand first than your
own interest but it’s not true in this case. All the hard work which Mr Modi has
been doing tirelessly since last four and half years, without even taking a day’s
break, does not hold much in the eyes of the people as long as they don’t get
what they perceive as their due share. The statesman Modi lost to politician
Modi as people really don’t seem to care as how much good work you are
doing for the future of the country and its people as they only want to see
instant results.
If Mr Modi wants to serve the nation for longer or wants to come back in
2019 to complete his unfinished task, he may have to resort to some populist
measures, these are the ploys which other parties have been using for last
many decades to stay in power. I understand Mr Modi may not exactly be a
power-hungry man but if he is really concerned about country’s welfare and
wellbeing, he must stay there a little longer, at least one more term. Today, it’s
not only India but the whole world, which look up to Mr Modi for his visionary
approach to lead the world in making it a better place to live for everyone.

Christmas markets
What’s Christmas without snow-capped mountains, an open fireplace in a cosy
wooden chalet, buzzing Christmas markets, sipping the traditional mulled wine?
Well, if you are living in a city that offers you none of the above and you are big on
Christmas celebrations, head to Switzerland.
Christmas celebrations start in Switzerland on First Sunday of Advent, this year on
December 2 and last till Boxing Day on December 26.
One of the biggest attractions of this country that sees enthusiastic travellers from
all across the world are the different, vibrant and colourful Christmas markets
that pop up in almost every town and village. These popular markets represent the
best of Switzerland’s traditional culture, whether it is in their decorations, other
Christmas knick-knacks or food!
Here are the most famous Christmas Markets in the country to indulge
in this winter:
Montreux
With its complete fairy-tale ambience, Montreux is home to one of Switzerland’s
most beautiful markets. Nestled between steep hills and the lakeside, the town of
Montreux sets up over 160 chalets across the promenade to sell a wide variety of
handmade Christmas souvenirs and delicacies. The main attraction to watch out
for is the sound and light show in the Magical Garden and the Village of Elves – a
children’s paradise.
Zurich
With quaint Christmas markets, traditional advent concerts and impressive
Christmas shows, Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich, transforms from a financial hub
into an enchanting winter wonderland. From the old town of Niederdörfl and the
Opera house in the city to nearby romantic Rapperswil, every market emanates a
wonderful festive mood in the city. But the one that attracts visitors the most is the
Popular Christkindlimart in the central railway station, deemed to be one of the
largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe. A glittering feature of this market is
the 16-meter high Christmas tree which is adorned with more than 7,000 Swarovski
crystal ornaments.
Lucerne
The Lucerne Christmas Market is a charming affair with a canopy of twinkling
Christmas stars and the fragrance of gingerbread, toffees, spices, punch and mulled
wine. Every year several talented craftsmen, performers, and chefs do a great job
by entertaining and feeding visitors from around the world. A dozen Christmas
stalls offer all types of handmade Christmas gifts right from traditional wooden toys
and nativity scenes, to cosy knitted hats and scarves and also unique jewellery to
delightful candles.
Bern
Bern offers a cosy and charming festive setting far from all the hustle and bustle.
Local artisans offer their unique wares at the Münster Platz in front of the Bern
Minster, the church with the highest steeple in Switzerland. Serving the best of
mulled wine, visitors can take a stroll through the wide collection of collections of
arts and crafts and Christmas delicacies.
Basel
Basel arguably has the best and largest Christmas market in all of Switzerland.
Running for the whole of the advent period, the quaint markets can be found on
Barfüsserplatz and Münster Platz, right in the centre of the city.
Over 180 traders and artisans offer their goods for sale in small, rustic wooden
chalets alongside an array of culinary delights featuring waffles, sausages and the
typical Basel Läckerli (a kind of gingerbread). A warm glass of the Glühwein mulled
wine and raclette (melted cheese) make a great addition to the festive atmosphere.

The biggest event on the New Zealand
Tennis calendar begins on the 29th of
December with the qualifying rounds of
the Women’s ASB Classic in Auckland.
This will be followed by the Men’s
Classic, which culminates with the finals
on the 12th of January. This event was
started in 1956, and was then known as
the Auckland Open. Over the years it
has attracted big names from across the
world and has produced excellent tennis
at the Stanley Street courts.
World no 3 and defending Australian
Open champion Caroline Wozniacki
headlines the women’s event. She won
her first Grand Slam in Melbourne,
straight after playing at last year’s ASB
Classic. Wozniacki lost her second finals
at Stanley Street in 2018. She holds the
unfortunate record of being the most
successful player to have never won
a title in Auckland. The 28-year-old
Danish star who turned professional
in 2005, rose to number one in world
women’s rankings earlier in 2018. One
of the most marketable athletes in the
game, her presence will ensure the ASB
Classic is covered internationally.
A legend of the game, 38-year-old Venus
Williams returns to Auckland after
skipping the last ASB Classic. Venus is
in her 25th year on the tour, and has
won 23 Grand Slam titles alongside four
Olympic gold medals. Born in California,
Venus alongside sister Serena is credited
for bringing an altogether different level
of power and athleticism to the women’s
game.
The only player from Canada to have
ever reached a Wimbledon final –
Eugenie Bouchard returns to Auckland
this year. The 24 year old also won the
junior Wimbledon title in 2012 and has
had a strong 2018 with a semi-final’s
showing in Luxembourg Open. Eugenie
is one of the most followed tennis
players on social media. Her playing in
Auckland, will add to the visibility of the
City of Sails in front of a global audience.

court. The project will cost close to $20
million, and plans are afoot to have the
roof in place by 2021.The footfalls at
the event have increased by more than
70% percent in the past five years. This
also means that the stands in the centre
court need to be demolished and rebuilt
to accommodate more fans.
ASB Classic is the feather in the cap
for New Zealand Tennis. The ATP 250
event event is consistently rated the
best in the world in its category. This is
a testament to the organisers’ hard work
and patronage from tennis fans across
the country – long may this continue.
