Energy Analysis of Solar Charkha

During the study, NITRA team also worked on assessing the power
consumption of different Charkhas. The power consumption was
measured in terms of electricity units (KWh) consumed for the production
of one Kg of material. This study includes the installation of measuring
instrument on charkha and observation of power consumption during the
production process. The unit for measurement is UKG which is the power
consumption in electrical units (kWh) per Kg of material production.
Prior to the study, the team observed the electrical drive systems for each
Charkha. Following are the brief observations:
 It has been observed that Charkha No 2 & 3 was running on DC power
supply provided directly by solar panels.
 Charkha No 4 & 6 were connected to three phase AC power supply. To
convert DC power obtained by solar panels into 3 phase AC power, a
solar inverter was also used with it.
 Charkha No-7 was running on single phase AC power supply.

To check the performance of these charkhas, NITRA installed measuring

instrument on the charkha motor and observed the electrical parameters
(AC/DC voltage, AC/DC current and AC/DC power, power factor, harmonics
etc.) in regular intervals.

Following are some important of NITRA technical team based on the

above findings on electrical measurement taken during the study

 DC system has very less unit / electricity consumption but in

absence of solar energy, its battery backup is for 4-5 hrs only.
 Three phase AC system has higher unit / electricity consumption;
also the backup ie. three phase AC supply is not available for small
consumers.

Single phase AC system has higher unit consumption but the backup i.e.
single phase AC supply is available for small consumers.
