ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Navigation is a technique which basically focuses on process of monitoring and

controlling the movement of person or vehicle or craft from one place to another e.g.: Land

navigation, Marine Navigation, Aeronautic Navigation etc. (Bangare et.al, 2014).

In this study, the researchers will design an alternative navigator for Nueva Ecija

High School. This navigator is computer-based application which is basically for navigating

students’ classroom assignments inside the school premises College.

Mobile phones are nowadays far more than merely devices to communicate with.

Especially, Smartphone’s are products that help to make our work and everyday life

easier. Along with the advance in technology and popularity of these devices, the use of

mobile applications has increased enormously in the last few years. Based on new

techniques like GPS, sensors, compass and accelerometer, that can have used to

determine the orientation of the device, location-based applications coupled with

augmented reality views are also possible. There are several commercial navigation

applications - such as Google Maps, Yahoo Maps and Map quest that provide users with

directions from one place to another.

However, these applications must search along existing roads; they are not able

to provide services that are as precise as finding the classroom assignment of a student

within a specific period.

Review of Related Literature

The researchers present a number of related literature and studies that contain

gathered researches from different sources. This citing serves as guide in pursuing this

study.

Foreign Literature

Maps and route services are vital for navigation. For instance, the personal and

interactive use of maps in mobile environment has several advantages. The mobility of

mobile devices makes it possible to use maps for navigational purposes. On the other

hand, in desktop applications maps are used mainly for route planning. The rapid

development of new technologies enables high speed internet in mobile devices which

further makes it possible to use advanced online services for navigation. Most mobile map

applications nowadays are developed for cars; there is a lack of services for pedestrian

and cycle navigation.

The HaptiMap project aims at developing pedestrian navigation systems. The

motivation of this thesis is to complement the HaptiMap project in developing the location

based demonstrator that is being developed on Android mobile operation system platform.

Lund University and Lund Municipality are cooperating in the HaptiMap project to develop

the “Lund Challenge” demonstrator. The demonstrator is intended to make the sights of

Lund city more accessible from mobile phone application which will help tourists to

navigate themselves in Lund city. It should be designed as a touristic, historical location

based game. The application should not be functional only for general users but it also

should function for visually impaired users. The demonstrator should contain basic

components of exploring and way finding including the location of historical sites which

would make exploring them possible (HaptiMap, 2010).

2
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

Prior to Android application development the study of two datasets used in the

HaptiMap project was performed. Additionally the OpenStreetMap (OSM) and Swedish

National Road Database (NVDB) road network data were imported to PostGIS database

and the routing calculation were performed using the pgRouting functionality.

OSM is an example of volunteered geographic information. It is an open source

project that allows adding, editing and retrieving geographic data. The Google Mobile

Maps application provides exploring tools for navigating in the city. Similar application is

necessary to develop based on OSM data. While in the contrast to Google Mobile Maps

the OSM data and the navigation tools based on it include pedestrian paths for routing

that have the largest potential demand. Furthermore, since the development of OSM data

is an ongoing process and it is open source project a lot more pedestrian paths data is

expected that will assist better pedestrian route finding.

The Lund Challenge demonstrator should include standard navigation tools for

navigating users in the city. Miguel Molina is developing it at Faculty of Engineering in

Lund University. The demonstrator should include voice assistance which will allow visual

impaired users to get information about the sights and navigate themselves in the city.

The purpose of this study is to develop Android mobile map application with standard

navigation tools for pedestrians. The latter, as a prototype, would be used in future

developments of the Lund Challenge demonstrator (Mikayelyan, 2011).

Nowadays maps are used more for personal and interactive purposes than for just

visualization of spatial data. Due to technological progress it is now possible to use web

maps in mobile device environment. By use of wireless internet from geospatial services,

map data can be distributed to mobile devices like mobile phones or Personal Digital

Assistant (PDA). Because maps on mobile devices are used also in portable situations,

they should be presented in totally different way than on static personal desktops. Similar

to screen-based maps mobile maps also can be explored, updated and analyzed

3
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

interactively (Meng et al., 2005). While most current mobile map applications are made

for car navigation, applications for cyclists and pedestrian navigation also exist (Nivala,

2005).

Mobile phone Applications

The mobile phone is one of the quickest to be adopted technologies in human

history. As smart phones drop in price, we will see a rapid shifting how mobile phones are

perceived:

From simple communication devices to general purpose mobile computers. The

Apple iPhone and Google Android have already begun to popularize this paradigm shift.

Soon, even low end phones will be deployed with fast processors, long battery life, and

rich sensing capabilities (such as GPS, accelerometer, infrared light, etc.). And, unlike

their desktop counterparts, mobile phones have the unique property of always being on

hand, a near constant companion of their users. In this way, the mobile phone will become

a sort of digital extension of the user, sensing context as the user moves about the world.

However, tools and techniques that have long been refined for creating successful desktop

computing environments do not translate well to the mobile environment. The focus of our

proposal is on developing the next generation of mobile computing applications, which will

incorporate a near-constant internet connection, novel interactions (e.g., multi-touch),

sensors, and machine learning (e.g., activity inference) to provide rich, interactive

experiences.

Global Positioning System, popular and commonly known as GPS, is a kind of

space based navigation technology providing us with the exact location and time details

no matter where we are. It’s not affected by bad weather or any other obstruction in the

navigation process.

4
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

The technology was brought into the practice at the first time back in 1973 by U.S.

Defense Department. From the testing experience, the technology showed it’s much

superior and advanced, and it has superseded all the earlier versions of navigation

systems. With the rapid development of navigation technology, GPS is widely used in

many fields such as army, banking and surveillance, science, technology, commerce,

geology, telecommunication, and etc. In theory, the GPS technology works in this model.

A GPS Data Logger that tracks the exact location of a vehicle, or a device, and then the

tracking information would be acquired through the connection of the GPS data Logger

with a computer via local or global Internet. Thanks to the development of GPS technology,

the most advanced navigation technology-real time GPS service becomes true. It’s been

fast and wildly adopted in many fields and is becoming to play a crucial role in our modern

life, especially in security and safety field (Reddy, 2011).

Challenges in Mobile Application Development

Mobile phones are not just “phones” anymore with only “voice and SMS”

functionalities. The continuing spread of mobile technology will have a dramatic impact on

the lives of individuals and institutions. Convergence of internet and telecommunication

technologies is increasing rapidly. However, in the progress of mobile application

development, due to complex structure of mobile ecosystem, there is a fragmentation in

terms of different mobile “Operating Systems”, “Screen Resolutions”, “Device Models and

Capabilities,” and “User Experience”. Fragmentation is the word that defines the biggest

barrier. Fragmentation increases the cost and the time to develop mobile applications

(Reddy, 2011).

Different device models support different functionalities, such as touch screen,

gravity censors, camera flash, etc. Hardware performances also vary between devices. In

addition to that, some applications need to support external device functionalities. Screen

5
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

resolution is crucially important in application development. Ongoing trend is to have

bigger screen resolutions for expanded multimedia support, data presentation, and

browsing. However, device manufacturers tend to support multi‐range of resolutions to

address the needs of different user segments. User experience, which is simply the way

the users behave while using the keyboard, screen, entry‐exit functions, number of clicks,

etc., is different across device models. Usage scenarios and actions are different between

device models and these differences should be realized and taken into consideration in

order to deploy successful mobile applications.

Local Literature

According to Primer (2017), one of the difficult things that everyone can probably

experience when getting in an unfamiliar place is getting around the place. Good thing

there are navigation apps available in the Philippines that can improve r driving and

commuting experience and help reach the destination.

Waze is probably one of the most downloaded navigation apps in the Philippines.

It is available on both Android and iOS devices. Ride sharing services, such as Uber and

Grab, officially use Waze with its navigation. Waze is a community navigation app, which

means all its information, from real-time traffic to road blockage, are shared by the users.

It lets add friends to inform them about a person’s location and estimated time of arrival.

From discovering places, alternative ways, and even transit schedules, Google

Maps can be very helpful. It has a built in indoor maps to easily help find a way in big

places. A street view for locating the destination in the fastest and convenient way as

possible. Google Maps can be accessed on Android phones, iPhone and desktop.

Navitel Navigator is a precise offline GPS navigation with free geosocial services

and detailed maps of 64 countries, including the Philippines. It features information on all

traffic jams in the covered area, available in real-time. It can even message to some friends

6
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

to track their locations, even weather forecast, SpeedCam warnings, 3D mapping, and

Multilanguage support.

On the other hand, iOnRoad uses the smartphone camera and sensors to detect

vehicles in front of their car. It also has a built-in VisualRadar to map objects in front of the

driver in real time, so they can calculate the current speed. iOnRoad is supported by

iPhone, Samsung, and LG.

Some social media savvy would rather use Twitter and follow helpful accounts for

real time updates, and at the same time, check current traffic condition, and even tag their

friends as well. Twitter can be downloaded in any smartphone devices.

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 depicts the project plan. It describes the activity plan of the project. The

activities will be carried out in the same order. The researchers will be implementing the

proposed system on the basis of object oriented concepts. It means dividing whole system

into different modules.

Objective of the Study

This study entitled “Alternative Navigator for Nueva Ecija High School focused in

designing an alternative navigator for Nueva Ecija High School.

The pivotal aim of this research was to introduce a computer-based application by

adding some functionality aside from developed and existing navigators.

For this purpose, an application would be developed and as a prototype would be

used to supplementing the routing functionality and simple navigation tools.

Significance of the Study

The researchers believed that this study would be a great help not only to them,

but also to every school institution and parents since it dealt with the monitoring of the

students inside the school premises.

The researchers believe that this research study will be beneficial:

School Institution. It will provide them an offline application that can be used in

monitoring the students’ location inside the school premises within a specific time frame.

Future researchers. It will serve as a good source of information that they can

use as related studies in the research.

Parents. This study will aid the parents in a way that they will be guided and aware

of their children’s location so they could be monitored from time to time.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will design an alternative Navigator for Nueva Ecija High School as a

complex infrastructure in the province of Nueva Ecija. Especially new students and people

who are on it for the first time have a hard time to orientate themselves and find places.

8
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

Nueva Ecija High School has many different buildings. Most of the buildings are

connected to each other, some of them even by underground walkways. Even if there are

maps at some points on the campus, users do not have continuous help to get to their

destination especially for parents.

They can try to figure out a way to get to their target on these static maps, but as

soon as they start walking in the target direction they have no help any more. Whereas it

is very common to use navigation systems to reach designated locations of the students,

systems for this type of navigation are quite hard to find.

So, how it is possible to help freshmen and other inexperienced people orient

themselves in the school and support them finding places with the help of modern

techniques. The answer to this question is this alternative navigator. It will enable users

such as parents, students and teachers to obtain routes that are much more detailed than

an existing commercial application can provide.

The implementation of a navigator application calls for much greater complexity

than the simplest version of this type of application. At its core, a simple navigation

application would not be difficult to create.

Nueva Ecija High School would be represented as a Graph structure, with

locations (buildings, parking lots, etc.) on school stored as vertices of the Graph and

transitions between the locations (roads, sidewalks, etc.) stored as edges between the

vertices.

This application directs the user (parent, student and teacher) from his/her current

location to the exact location he/she searches for an individual student. It reduces the

effort of the user to walk all over the school. The user has to access this application

through an android phone when he/she enters the premises of the campus and register

prior to using the application. The user cannot use the application outside the campus

area. The user also has to mandatorily register to proceed. There already exist several

9
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

commercial navigation applications - such as Google Maps, Yahoo Maps and MapQuest

- that provide users with directions from one place to another. However, these applications

must search along existing roads; they are not able to provide routes that are as precise

as an on school path would require.

Definition of Terms

The following terms were defined to give information on the readers that will help

them better understand the key terms in this study:

Alternative. A choice limited to one of two or more possibilities, of things,

propositions, or courses of action or the selection of which precludes any other possibility

(British Council, 2018).

Navigator. It is a way of Finding and/or locating areas of interest, people and

accessing other associated sites using a specific set of information and links (The Law

Dictionary, 2018).

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research method used in the study to gather the data.

This includes the research design, techniques for data gathering, sample and sampling

procedure, and data analysis.

Research Method

The research method to be used in the study is developmental method. According

to Kowalczyk (2015), developmental research is a study focused on the progressive

changes that occur as a product develops.

Research and development, innovation, new product development and product

design are often used interchangeably, but they each have quite distinct meanings.

Innovation, therefore can involve the exploitation of a new market opportunity, or on the

other hand, the development and marketing of a new invention; however, it usually

involves a combination of both since many inventions have no market demand and so do

not constitute an innovation (Ruadesign, 2015).

Since this study is concerned with the researchers’ objective of designing an

alternative navigator, developmental method of research is appropriate to use.

Participants

In this study, participants will be teachers of Nueva Ecija High School. Purposive

sampling will be used as sampling technique simply because the teachers are the most

qualified to rate the developed/innovated alternative navigator.

According to Crossman (2017), purposive sampling has non-probability sample

that is selected based on characteristics of a population and the objective of the study.

Purposive sampling is also known as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling. This

11
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

type of sampling can be very useful in situations when researchers need to reach a

targeted sample quickly, and where sampling for proportionality is not the main concern.

Instruments

This study involves development of an alternative navigator for Nueva Ecija High

School and the determination of acceptability in the prospective will be tested and

evaluated by selected respondents through survey questionnaire.

Procedure

The researchers will ask for the guidance of an IT expert for the design and

implementation of the alternative navigator.

Through literature, the researchers will be using questionnaires and interview to

determine the acceptability of the alternative navigator. Assistance of the experts will be

helpful too in correcting the errors.

The survey-questionnaire will undergo careful checking for correctness of the

statements. Researchers’ adviser will assist the researchers in the formulation of the

questionnaire.

PROJECT METHODS USED

This chapter discusses the different phases of how the computer-based application

has been created.

The goal of this chapter is to explain the rationale behind the programming project

and to present a brief overview of the design and prototyping process. This will also give

context to the discussion of goals and its design and implementation process. Then, the

researchers present the guidelines extracted from the literature and the consequent goals

for the design of computer-based software. Also included in this chapter is a short

summary of an early project and study conducted on different interaction and visualization

methods of localized lists with the use of Visual Basics.

Project Method

As a result of technologies web-based applications with rich contents are evolving

to be more and more like normal applications in aspects, such as interactivity, functionality,

and usability. This evolvement makes it possible to create a computer-based service,

providing maps for users to search and browse geographic information.

This will also evaluate the functionality, usability and accuracy. It will also explain

how computer-based mapping works, common functionality provided, and evaluates the

functionality provided as well as the offered usability. In addition to this, it also includes

the results of several tests, illustrating the compatibility, performance and accuracy.

Analysis Phase

In this phase, the designers asked permission from proper authorities to conduct

interviews and observation in the locations that they will be using in this project. They

gathered the data needed by asking questions from the faculty staffs.

This Gantt chart covered the Analysis, Design, Simulation, Implementation,

Monitoring and Management phases from the Month of November to March.

The designers analyzed what are the needed requirements in developing the

computer-based application for Nueva Ecija High School in Cabanatuan City. The

designers analyzed and discussed which devices and equipment will be using in the

proposed project design together with what specifications and configurations needed. The

researchers also searched a location to be able to determine where the computer will be

installed. They made sure that the coverage of the design will be wide and it will cover

the entire campus. They also assured that all devices needed in this network were in

affordable price but with high quality and good performance.

Design Phase

This phase was done from November to December. The design phase can be

referred to as the transformation phase, because this is when an idea is actually transform

into a real working system. The researchers layout the design and all the features that will

be displayed. The developers used an event driven programming language and IDE

(integrated development environment) of Microsoft. Graphical user interface is used with

a basic programming language to provide a graphical programming environment for

developing a user interface.

14
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

By making the design of this proposed computer-based software, the designer

properly arranged the tools and conduct a canvassing of equipment to be able to

determine which of it is appropriate to use without disregarding the quality and assurance

of each devices. The designers also think of a better way of connecting with no error and

having the best tools to provide the applicable ways of communicating with modern

technology style.

Simulation/ Prototyping Phase

By the time that this proposed project is done and the peripherals and devices are

properly arranged, the designer will simulate each of it to determine the functionality to

avoid such errors to fix it before it implemented thoroughly.

Upon clicking the student’s section, a map window will appear to determine the

exact location of the student’s section at a specific time.

16
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

Implementation Phase

Implementing this proposed project will be based upon the approval of each

network location. Once it is done, the network designers will eventually handle it in every

possible way and discussed to the person in-charge every details he needed in this

project.

Monitoring Phase

In monitoring the use of the computer-based software, the designers will manually

check every device used in this project and to check which device is giving error or

malfunctioned, to sustained and ensured the transmission of data and sharing of files is

well-organized and working properly. This measurement is given ahead of time to avoid

inconveniences.

Management Phase

The designers and Nueva Ecija High School itself will provide a personnel who will

manage the communication. If the institution will provide that person, he/she must undergo

a training to be an IT practitioner or technical staff capable of monitoring and managing

the software at the same time. By that time, that person will be the one who will be

responsible to conduct an analysis if there is a problem and give an efficient and fast

solution to that problem. If he/she encounter an error which is unable to fix or not within

his capability, before anything else he/she must contract the designers to fix it and avoid

such delay.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The demographic profile of the respondents and other variables were analyzed

based on the responses derived from the survey-questionnaire.

17
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

To answer the determination of acceptability for alternative navigator, weighted

frequency and weighted mean were used.

The total weighted frequency and total weighted mean were computed in order to

be able to evaluate and analyze the responses. The formulae were:

For Percentage:

F
P= x 100
N

Where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency

N = Total number of respondents

100 = Constant multiplier

For weighted mean:

Table 2 shows the age distribution of the respondents. It is shown that seventy-

two (72) or 87.80% of the respondents’ age were in the 18-22 age bracket, six (6) or 7.32%

were in the age 23-27 years old, two (2) or 2.44% were in the age bracket of 28-32 years

old and only one (1) or 1.22% were between the 33-37 years of age and 28-42 years of

age, respectively.

Out of the eighty-two (82) respondents in the survey comprising of 3rd year college

nursing students, majority of them were in the young adulthood stage and considered as

late adolescents (Teipel, 2018).

20
ALTERNATIVE NAVIGATOR FOR NUEVA ECIJA HIGH SCHOOL

The results implied that the 3rd year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students from

the Wesleyan University-Philippines’ College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences were

dominated by young adults.

According to Hamada (2014), most people are 18 years old when they begin

college. Thus many graduates are 22 when they finish a 4-year program on time.

that fifty-seven (57) or 69.51% of the respondents were female and twenty-five (25 or

30.49% were male.

The nursing students who responded to the study were represented by females.

The result implied that most of the respondents who were currently enrolled in the

Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Wesleyan University-Philippines were female.

The data on gender supports the old time deduction that the nursing course is

predominantly female and that there will be more female nurse professionals in the future

compared to male ones who would provide nursing care services (Ozdemir, 2017).

Recommendations

Based from the findings and conclusions presented above, the researchers of the

study recommends the following:

1. First, the results of the study may be disseminated for the information of greater

number of students, the facilitators or instructors of the students, and the school

administrators as well to provide a basis in improving and enhancing the

application to be conducted in the near future to better assist the parents and

teachers.

2. That another study be conducted involving greater number of respondents to

include teachers, so that a more reliable and more specific information could be
