CSI KATTAKAMBAL MEDICAL MISSION CLINIC

Kattakambal Panchayath is in Trichur District adjacent to Malappuram District, comparatively a

backward area of the Trichur District. Due to this backwardness, the Codacal Hospital has started
a Clinic for 3 days in a week. Later a permanent outreach programme was functioning on
forenoons of all days, except Sundays. A 3 member team consisting of a Doctor, Staff Nurse and
Pharmacist were rendering their services to the community. Later due to financial implications the
Codacal hospital administration constrained to stop the clinic service at Kattakambal.

It is very inadequate to meet the health requirements of the community. Hence, Kattakambal
needs more medical care intervention to achieve the ultimate aim ‘Healthy Community’ through
medical mission clinic for the surrounded needy areas and for the scheduled caste colonies. So
with the motto of “cost effective quality patient care “ and human resource development with
minimum charges or even nominal for the deserving. We hope this CSI Medical Mission Clinic,
Kattakambal will become the corner stone for the Healing Ministry in the entire area. (A clinic
may be defined as a place of professional practice with facilities for outdoor consultation and
treatment during scheduled hours by one or more physicians and staff and equipment essential for
the services provided. It may or may not have the facilities for limited investigations specific to
the scope of services provided. A large percentage of the population, in rural as well as urban
areas, is dependent on private clinics and, therefore, the quality of healthcare services provided by
them is very important. )

We are intending Medical Mission at Kattakambal, Trichur Dist. [Earlier Kattakambal was the
outreach programme area of CSI Mission Hospital. Later considering the importance and
effectiveness of the programme and vulnerability of the area a Medical Mission Clinic was set up
and that has functioned in the forenoon on all week days.

Terrain : ‘ Chengalu’ and Clay mixed soil in fields
(Laterite: These soils mainly occur in the midlands at elevation 20 to 100m above M.S.L. as
a strip between the coastal belt and hilly mid upland. All these laterite soils are acidic with
low water holding capacity, soil erosion and reduced effective soil volume. The laterite soil is
generally suitable for most of the dry land crops. It is mainly cultivated with coconut,
arecanut, banana, tapioca, vegetables, yams, pepper, pineapple, fruit trees etc.

Kattakambal is 10 kms north - west to Kunnamkulam town, and 30 kms from CSI Mission
Hospital, Codacal, the only Mission Hospital catering to the service of entire Healing
Ministry of the erstwhile Diocese of North Kerala. Kattakambal is 8 kms west of
Thrissur – Kozhikode highway.

5) Profile of the Area & People

People of Kattakambal predominately depend upon agriculture. In agriculture sector
paddy, coconut, arecanut, vegetables, mainly banana plantations, pepper and cashew nut
are the important crops. Kattakambal is a Peninsula (Surrounded water in three sides.
Earlier it was a part of Cochin Province at north – west corner and because of
geographical isolation the place was neglected. Religious harmony is very much
prevailing here. There are lot flock arts.
Production of paddy is diminishing day by day. This is because of increasing cost of
production against yield per unit. The scarcity of agriculture labourers in paddy
cultivation, diseases, low price and low yield in coconut sector, the low price of arecanut,
are main reasons of stagnation of agriculture sector. The stagnation of agriculture sector
has wrecked the entire employment sector. It is true that the labourers in construction field
are getting reasonable increment in wages than the past. This is also a reason of the set
back in agriculture sector indirectly. Due to this agriculture labourers are turning to the
construction felid. In industrial sector people have very nominal opportunity in this area.

(Translation of above Malayalam: In olden days itself many traditional and Indigenous Systems of
medicines like Ayerveda . Sidha, Unani practitioners were here. Before the emergence of
Allopathic treatment here, these practitioners were conducted treatment in their houses itself.
During the period ‘Kochi Raja’ regime itself government Allopathic dispensary .has started
and later it has closed down. Later in 1930s in Pazhaji village at Iynoore military hills a leprosy
hospital has started and that too has unfortunately closed down due to lack of necessary attention
from the authorities and the building has ruined. In 1962 near Pazaji high School a Primary Health
Centre has started functioning. )
A PHC is functioning in the Panchayath area without proper facilities. There is no
facility for Homeo or Ayurvedic treatment. For health care facilities people have to
depend mainly on private hospitals in Kunnamkulam or Edappal. Recently a
Pediatric Clinic namely Chirakkal Medical Centre has started at Chirackal, just one
km from our propsed site. ( Chirakkal is the nearest centre to Kattakambal in
between Kattakampal and Pazhaji )

6) Problems & Issues

 The Project area was chosen because of lack of hospital care and allied health care
facilities. The incidence of respiratory tract infections and preventable infective
diseases has been common in the community. Low economic status with ignorance
led the people to situation of not responding to the health needs in a positive way
and of accepting everything as fate in life.

7) Rationale - Justification
There are many private hospitals with multi - specialty departments in the district
head quarters at Trichur. Likewise there are hospitals in the nearby town
Kunamkulam or Edappal. But the facilities are not at all affordable to the common
men of this area.

So with the Motto of “ cost effective quality patient care “ and human resources
development we hope this Medical Mission Clinic and its outreach programme will
become the corner stone for the healing ministry of Cochin Diocese in the
backward area of Trichur District.

b) Provide Health and Hospital Care facilities to common men at an affordable

price.

To introduce Community Health Care through Medical Mission Clinic

Re open Outpatient unit with consultation and minimum emergency care facilities.

11. Methodology
The services of the Medical Mission Clinic can be made available to the entire
population in the Panchayath at the beginning itself and later in and around
Kattakambal.

13) Monitoring
Diocese have to monitor the programme, Periodical visit of Diocesan Officers or
representative on regular basis, periodical programme planning , evaluation and
coordination of the Mission will help the Project for the effective financial and
programme monitoring.
14) ESTIMATED BUDGET

Minimum repairing has to do on existing building, Furniture and Equipments has to

be brought.

15) Co - ordination
A Medical Mission or Healing Ministry Committee headed by Bishop as Chairman
and persons nominated by the Diocesan Bishop will be in the monitoring
committee and that committee will be in charge of all aspects of the Mission. The
Medical Mission activities will be co - ordinated by a team of staff headed by a
Medical Officer. He /She will be responsible for overall functioning of the Project
including administration and submission of reports and statements of accounts.
Staff review meeting will be conducted once in a month to reflect on the progress
and the process of the Project.

Kattakambal will be a model ‘Healthy Community’

17) Sustainability
This programme is proposed on the basis of the need of the local people and
availability of land approximately 1.5 acres with good wells with plenty of water.
Properly fenced land with compound walls in all sides. The area is considered as
very potential area. This Project will enable the people of the target area to improve
the quality of life.
