ABOUT IT:
What do you know about Don José de San Martín?
Don José de San Martín was born in 1778 in Yapeyú, in the
North of Argentina. He was the son of an aristocratic Spanish
family. When he was seven, his family returned to Spain. He
was in the Spanish Army for 22 years.
In 1812 he came back to Argentina and offered his services to
the Government. He wanted to defeat the Spanish forces and
establish the Independence of the Americas.
He trained an army, crossed the Andes and liberated Chile.
He defeated the Spaniards in Lima and then met Bolívar in
Guayaquil. San Martín and Bolívar discussed a plan to liberate
Perú and to design a political future for Latin America but they
did not reach an agreement. San Martín came back to
Argentina, disappointed.
Soon he left for France. He died in Boulogne-sur-mer in 1850.
