Differentiate the ff:


a. Opinion
i. Expresses an evaluation based on a personal judgement or belief which
may or may not be verifiable.
ii. These sentences tend to be generalizations or moral viewpoints.
Example: Mr. Lopez is a good music teacher.
b. Fact
i. Reports information that can be directly observed or can be verified or
checked for accuracy.
ii. These statements describe events and situations about which, through
careful research, the historian can determine the truth or falsity beyond a
reasonable doubt.
Example: The Civil War battle at Gettysburg took place in July of 1863.
c. Inference
i. A logical conclusion or a legitimate implication based on factual
information.
ii. These statements contain elements of the historian's own viewpoint.
Example: The boiling point for water is 212 F or 100 C.
2. Define the ff:
a. Denotative Meaning
i. The literal meaning of a word; the dictionary definition.
Example:
 Dwelling (noun) : a shelter in which people live.
 Abstruse (adjective) : difficult to comprehend.
b. Connotative Meaning
i. The emotions, values, or images associated with a word; not the literal
definition; usually positive, negative, or neutral.
Example:
 He’s such a dog – dog connotes shamelessness.
 That woman is a dove at heart – dove implies peace.
c. Context Clues
i. Hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can
use to understand the meaning of new or unfamiliar words.
Example:
 His emaciation, that is, his skeleton-like appearance, was frightening to
see. – Skeleton-like is the definition of emaciation.
 Piscatorial creatures, such as flounder, salmon, and trout, live in the
coldest parts of the ocean. – Piscatorial obviously refers to fish.
