LPGA Tour
Michelle Wi, teenage phe-
nom, should be concentrating
on the LPGA Tour instead of
trying to compete on the
PGA Tour, where she is non-
competitive and taking a
sponsor exemption for a
deserving PGA Tour player. I
believe Michelle, a 15 year
old, will be one of the stars
on the LPGA Tour, but to
compete with the men would
be a step once she shows to
be a dominating factor on the
LPGA Tour.
LPGA-USGA girls golf of
Walnut Creek, co-sponsored
by the Fountain for Youth,
has been awarded to

as its newest site. Bill
Schmeh will be site director,
with Bob Boldt, Rob Boldt,
Dave Delong and the
Boundary Oak teaching staff
as on site coordinators. Girls
golf has over 180 sites
nationwide and is a develop-
ment program for girls age 7
to 17 to learn to play golf,
build friendships and estab-
lish a lifelong interest in the
game.

Since the advent of steel driv-
ers graphite shafts, what is
the distance change in yards
from the long drive distance
leaders (Dan Pohl - 1980 and
Hank Kuene - 2004)? Dan
Pohl averaged 274 and Hank
Kuene averaged 314. To
average these stats, 50% of
the drives are over the listed
average. I cannot imagine
how Hank could possibly
stay in play for 18 holes. A
280 yard drive going toward
a hazard or OB is in play -
add 34 more yards and you
can see why Hank is not
amongst the top money win-
ners.
A statistic that hasn't changed
to any degree is surprisingly
putting:
1980 - Jerry Pate - 28.81
2004 - Brian Gay - 27.96

From the black tees,
Boundary Oak is in the top 5
longest golf courses in
Northern California (7,090)
and needs to be lengthened if
the PGA Tour was to play a
tournament here. During the
Stead Open, our signature
14th hole, par 5 at 543 yards
was a two shot hole for some
of the pros, with one contest-
ant reaching the green with a
5 iron!!
One of the most interesting
books to read is the USGA
Rulings of Golf 2004. It is
amazing the situations that

arise for rulings:
1. Two players hit into a
water hazard at approximate-
ly the same spot. One caddy
retrieved both balls and hand-
ed A's ball to B and B's ball
to A. Both players hit to the
green. Upon reaching the
green, they discovered the
balls were exchanged incor-
rectly. What is the ruling?
2. This situation happened in
the Senior Tour
Championship when I was
playing with Lee Trevino at
Dearborn C.C. Michigan.
Lee marked his ball and
threw the ball to his caddy
who missed the ball and it
went into the water which
surrounded the green. What
is the ruling?
3. Lost ball: Player searches
for ball, can't find it. He goes
back to the tee and tees up
another ball. The original
ball was found within a five
minute period. What is the
ruling?
4. An insect lands on the ball
on the putting green. The
player swats the insect, mov-
ing the ball, which rolls down
the hill into the water. What
is the ruling?

Stead Open has arrived as a
major Northern California
championship tournament
with 135 professionals signed
as of this writing - $120,000
purse and a field that is on a
level with the nationwide
tours and a big thank you to
Mike Stead, Alex Spanos and
John McCarthy of the
California Tour.
If you play the black tees or
you want to try our black tee
on No. 2 go and see what is
one of the most picturesque
views on a par three hole in
Northern California.
I have purchased a machine
that could possibly be the
savior of our 35 year old
greens. It is called Planet Air
and has knives that penetrate
up to nine inches and leaves a
surface that is immediately
puttable. Hopefully we can
eliminate or reduce what all
golfers hate - plugged greens
that interfere with play during
the spring and fall.

the amenities of a cruise, then
you need to try a golf cruise.
I went on my first cruise to
the Mexican Riviera, playing

popularity of the golf courses.
