CHAPTER No.

INTRODUCTION

This is the age of science and technology. No nation can progress in this age without
being active and competent in the field of science and technology. The textbook of
general science are a key tool in developing scientific ideas and clarifying scientific
concept in the mind of student at early stages of education.

Science has an important role in the development of children. The National


Commission in education has felt the need of science to be taught in all grad 6th of
Pakistan. Textbooks play important role in the countries, textbook is defined as:

“ Text book is manual of instruction or a standard


book in any branch of study.”

book containing fact about a particular subject that is used by people studying that
subject.

Textbook play important role in learning. It represent a useful resource for both
teacher as a course designer and learners. However, the use of readymade textbook has
its advantages and disadvantages.

It is very important to develop and maintain textbook for a particular


subject of a particular class. But books should not prepared once changes and
altemations must be taken as to meet the progress of scientific age. Science and new
invention are creating a totally new world in which the people need to be adjusted well.
So, is important to have continues study of the textbook.

Statement of the study


This study has been opted for the textbook for class 6th prescribed by Punjab textbook
board.

Significance of the study


Science has lead us to find out things that give us what we have today. science
educators unanimously agree that textbook play a important role in teaching and learning
process (Climent, 2008; Koppal and Caldwell, 2004)

For this reasons numerous research studies have been conducted in science
textbook. In 1941, Graham noted that “ the textbook is an old instruments in learning
and teaching process”.

Science educators observed that when the student learn science topic there is a
only source of information.

So, this study was carried out to evaluate the currently available published
textbook of general science for six class. A special tool was constructed using many
aspects of textbook evaluation.

Objectives of the study


The objectives of the study consists of

1. To evaluate the text of the grade 6 science text book in accordance with the
prescribed objectives.
2. To find out the qualities and drawback of present text-book.
3. To suggest improvements in the text-book on the basis of evaluation.

Delimitation
Due to time and money constraints this study was delimited to, government
schools of Sargodha city.
