HOMEWORK

Watch how Seema, a teacher in Japan, uses songs and then take notes
on the way she uses them in class and her reasons for using them.

She said that there are many ways to use songs:

 For vocabulary sets. For example, you can use the song “The Old
McDonald” for teaching farm animals.
 For phonetic sounds. Students will recognize the sounds and learn
the correct pronunciation.
 For teaching the parts of the body (Head, shoulders, knees and
feet).
 For teaching action verbs. Their students clap while they say
different action verbs.

The most important reasons to use songs in class are:

 You can teach language, a lot of language.

 The main point of a song is repetition. And for everybody a song is
way better than a drill.
 Songs increase motivation of students, since it’s funny.
 For teaching kids, you have to use a lot of gestures and that will
make your lesson more memorable.
 When you use songs, you are teaching them not to get used to the
translation.
 Is not necessary to have a singing voice you can give them rhythm
and that’s all, because you want to teach the rhythm and the
stress of the words, not to sing perfect.
 After they have practiced many times a song you can use
karaoke. It motivates all students, even the shy ones, and they can
practice more.
