Greek Aegean Islands
The Aegean Islands are located between mainland Greece and Turkey and consist of 7 groups of islands.
The two most popular groups of islands with tourists are the Cyclades and the Dodecanese and there
are some wonderful locations for a dream wedding in Greece within these two groups of islands.
The Cyclades islands are made up of around 220 islands and among them some of the most famous and
photographed in Greece: Santorini, Mykonos and Amorgos.
Weddings in Santorini have become very popular due to the breathtaking settings on offer for the
ceremonies and receptions. If you read travel magazines, you’ll recognise the blue-domed rooftops of
Santorini as front-page regulars. The island’s clifftop villages and fiery sunsets lure couples. Plus, the
restaurants in places like Oia are characterised by soft candlelight and serenading guitarists.
Stylish and glamorous Mykonos offers some exceptional wedding venues. A Mykonos wedding is the
ideal way to experience Cycladic life while rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous who have
frequented this cosmopolitan island for years. The most popular and one the most authentic locations
across the Greek islands is the Mykonos Windmill with amazing views of the Little Venice bay.
Skiathos is the idyllic Sporades island that will give our brides and grooms the opportunity to have their
very own Mamma Mia wedding! Skiathos is blissfully undeveloped – there’s not a high rise in sight here.
It means your wedding photos will consist of nothing but vast olive groves and the rugged coastline that
stretches into the distance. Cosmopolitan Skiathos Town is ideal for ceremony after-parties, too.
Amorgos is a hidden gem and offers a truly memorable ceremony. f you are looking to get married in an
unhurried, traditional, naturally beautiful island, then Amorgos has to be your dream wedding
destination. Weddings take place in picturesque Aegiali with a choice of a Greek Orthodox or civil
ceremony.
The Dodecanese islands take their name from the Greek meaning 12 islands but actually consist of 12
larger plus 150 smaller islands. These islands offer beautiful beaches with crystal waters, traditional
villages, exciting nightlife and are in fact closer to Turkey than mainland Greece. Because of their
position, they have experienced an even greater number of invasions than the rest of Greece and boast
a wealth of archaeological remains.
If you like the idea of stepping back in time, Rhodes is worthy of your shortlist. Its old town is a World
Heritage Site, and one of the finest Medieval citadels in existence. It’s also got the best sunshine record
of all the Greek Islands, so it’s highly unlikely your big day will be ruined by rain.
Kos is one of the most popular islands in this group and although one of the most developed islands in
Greece, still offers some unique locations for a memorable wedding. Kos really knows how to hold a
celebration, and its capital, Kos Town, is ripe for post-ceremony festivities. Your special day will likely
end with plate-smashing and all-night dancing to local rembetika music.
Crete weddings offer some more traditional Greek wedding options, chapels, hotels and even a temple!
Crete is the biggest and the oldest of the Greek Islands, so it’s witnessed thousands of people becoming
husband and wife. Not only does it offer beautiful settings, but there’s a lot to explore in the days after
the ceremony. Trek to a sunset-lit Palace of Knossos, or hire a car together and explore barely-trodden
countryside.
Greek Ionian Islands
The Ionian Islands are situated in the Ionian Sea and lie south of the Adriatic between mainland Greece
and Italy.
In Greek mythology, the name Ionian comes from Io, one of Zeus' lovers who, escaping the wrath of a
jealous Hera, sister to Zeus and the goddess of marriage, passed through what is now called the Ionian
Sea.
In Greek the islands are called "Eftanisa" meaning "Seven Isles". Each one has its own unique character
and an enviable balance of natural beauty and rich, cultural history.
They are the greenest islands in Greece and boast lush vegetation, idyllic beaches, delicious local cuisine,
and unspoilt villages where centuries-old customs still hold sway. The Ionian Islands also display strong
Mediterranean and British influences compared to other parts of Greece.
Greece offers a number of dream wedding destinations, each offering its own character. The Ionian
islands lie on the west side of Greece, most of which have links with international flights and boats to
Italy.
Corfu is Greece’s Emerald Isle. It’s covered in olive groves, vineyards and cypress trees, so ceremony
backdrops really are something else. The capital, Corfu Town, has atmospheric tavernas and cobbled
Medieval streets.
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin cemented Kefalonia’s fame, but those in the know flocked here long before
Penelope Cruz. The island is ringed by some of the best beaches in Greece, so if you want to say your
vows with sand beneath your feet, say them here.
Limestone cliffs and white beaches populated with loggerhead turtles – these are Zakyntho’s
foundations. And the wedding venues really make the most of the scenery. You can pick from a string of
sea-facing terraces and gardens.
From the cosmopolitan café culture of Corfu Town, to secluded coves and turquoise waters around the
coast of Paxos; from the pristine white beaches of Lefkada to the breathtaking mountains in Kefalonia;
or from the enchanting, mythical, ancient Ithaca to the mesmerizing marine life in Zakynthos; Ionian
