The Sun and its characteristics

The Sun
The Sun is a star , a hot ball of glowing gases at the heart of the
solar system.
It is a middle-aged star, medium-sized, and of average
brightness.
The Greeks called the sun as Helios.
The Romans called it Sol.
 Thermonuclear fusion
 The process in which a star produces its light, heat
and energy. This takes place at the core of the star.
Characteristics of the Sun
The mass of the sun is about 2 x 1030 kg
It is one of the largest star in the Milky Way galaxy.
In comparison, Earth’s mass is just about 6 x 1024 kg
The Milky Way galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy consisting of
400 billion stars.
It is about 100 000 light –years across.
The sun is 93 millions miles from the Earth.
The distance of the sun to the Earth is called an astronomical
unit (AU) and is sometimes used to denote large distances that
are less than a light year.
