Summary

The job advertisements used to compile this report were found on social media

and in newspapers from October 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. Data was entered into

a spreadsheet to show the date the job was advertised, job title, industry, organization

advertising the job, management level of employment, educational requirements,

previous experience required and type of employment.

The data gathered shows 325 jobs advertised between October 1, 2018 and

December 31, 2018 with an average of 108 jobs advertised per month. There was a 6.1%

reduction in jobs advertised from the July 2018 to September 2018 period. Futhermore,

there was a 11.7% reduction in the amount of jobs advertised between November 2018

and December 2018. There was a shift in the sector in which the majority of jobs were

advertised. For the three-month period, the majority of vacancies were found in the

hospitality (restaurant) industry and entry level positions remained the most popular types

of jobs available at 79.1%. Data further revealed that the majority of jobs advertised can

be placed in the category of Chef/Cook with 27 jobs compared to Sales/Customer Service

holding the majority in the pervious period with 36 jobs.

A Bacehlor’s Degree remained the most popular educational requirement

accounting for 46.25% of advertisements which identified educational requirements

overall. Bachelor’s Degrees also account for the educational requirement for 29.1% of

entry level positions advertised which identified an educational requirement. Although

Bachelor’s Degrees account for the majority of jobs overall, the Caribbean Secondary

Education Certificate (CSEC) remains the most popular educational requirement for entry

level positions at 38.2%.

Industries
The most popular industry was the hospitality (restaurant) industry. Compared to

the period July 2018 – September 2018 there has been a 156.5% increase in jobs

advertised for this sector. While it was expected that the hospitality (hotel) industry would

have a significant increase in advertisements for the October 2018 – December 2018

period, the idustry saw a 28.9% reduction in jobs advertised, allowing for the hospitality

(restaurant) industry to emerge having the majority of advertised vacancies.

Type of Employment
The most popular level of employment was entry level positions and full-time

positions remained the majority of jobs advertised. There was very little change in the

amount of jobs advertised for each level of employment. Entry-level positions account for

80.92% of jobs advertised while low-level is 12%, middle-level is 13.23% and top-level

management is 1.53%. Full-time positions account for 87.69% of jobs advertised while

part-time is 3.69%, temporary is 5.53% and contract is 3.08%. The majority of jobs can

be places in the category of Chef/Cook.

Requirements
For the October – December period the most popular educational requirement was

a bachelor’s degree which accounts for 46.25% of advertisements which identified

educational requirements and 11.38% of jobs overall. The police certificate of character

was required for 8.92% of jobs advertised compared to 2.89% in the previous period. Of

the jobs which asked for a police certificate of character, 93.1% were entry level positions.

The police certificate of character was required primarily for the hospitality (hotel) industry.

The area of business administration/management was the most popular area of study

required accounting for 40.68% of jobs which specified educational requirements and

7.38% of jobs overall.
