Penguins Sign Riley Sheahan to a One-Year Contract
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Riley Sheahan to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.
Sheahan’s deal carries an average value of $2.5 million.
The 26-year-old Sheahan recorded one of his best seasons after arriving in Pittsburgh in October of 2017. He was ranked eighth on the Penguins in the 2017-18 season with 32 points (11G-21A). He held three points (1G- 2A) in the postseason. His assist and point totals were the second-highest of his career.
Sheahan stood third on the team among forwards with 46 blocked shots. He also ranked first on the team in shorthanded minutes per game (2:41).
The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Sheahan holds a career average of 50.2% on faceoffs. By the end of the 2017-18 season his faceoff win percentage was at a career high of 54.44%. He continued striving in the 2017-18 playoff season with an average of 55.9%.
The Penguins, in need of a center, acquired the St. Catharines, Ontario native in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings on October 21, 2017. Pittsburgh traded Scott Wilson and a 2018 third round draft pick. Sheahan played eight games with the Red wings before being traded.
Before arriving in Pittsburgh, Sheahan played four full seasons, and parts of three others with the Detroit Red Wings. The Detroit Red Wings selected Sheahan in the first round (21st overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.
Sheahan has played 365 career regular-season games with the Penguins and Red Wings tallying 49 goals, 81 assists, and 130 points.
