together.
Q1. [20 marks] Consider a power system shown in Figure 1. The line and bus data
in per-unit (pu) are given in Tables 1 and 2, respectively.
(a) Determine bus admittance matrix YBU S (in polar form).
(b) With Bus-1 as the slack bus (with V1 = 1.05∠0◦ pu), using the fast decoupled
method, obtain one iteration of the power flow solution. Choose a “flat start”
initial condition.

Q2. [10 marks] The fuel cost curves (in dollars/hour) of two generators are given as
follows:
C1 (P1 ) = 900 + 45P1 + 0.01P12
C2 (P2 ) = 2500 + 43P2 + 0.003P22
(a) Use Lagrangian multiplier method to find the economic dispatch for a total demand
of 700 MW.
(b) Use the base-point and participation factor method to find the economic schedule
for a demand of 650 MW. Start from the solution to part (a).
Q3. [10 marks] Consider a sample system having four thermal generating units.
Each unit has capacity 1.0 MW (min) – 15.0 MW (max). The unit commitment (UC)
table for the system is given in Table 3.
Assume identical failure rate λ of 1/year and repair rate µ of 99/year for all the
four units, and maximum tolerable insecurity level (MTIL) to be 0.004. Using Patton’s
security function state whether the above UC table is secure or insecure for the load of
32 MW.
