BORDER SECURITY/IMMIGRATION
Tamil Ship Arrives at CFB Esquimalt near Victoria – 12 August 2010
The MV Sun Sea, a Thai-flagged cargo vessel carrying 490 Tamil migrants, has docked at CFB Esquimalt near
Victoria. The Sri Lankan government claims that many of the migrants onboard are part of the LTTE terrorist
group. The MV Sun Sea and its passengers, who have are all seeking asylum in Canada, had travelled slowly since
Thursday when it came under the watch and then the guard of Canadian authorities after it entered the country’s
territorial waters.

Comment: The Sun Sea left Sri Lanka in April and had previously tried to land in Thailand and Australia but was
turned away.

New Rules of Boat Migrants Planned – 13 August 2010

Senior figures within the Conservative government are working to craft new tools that would treat boatloads of
illegal immigrants arriving on Canada’s shores differently from other refugee claimants. When asked what Ottawa
could do to prevent more boats of illegal migrants from heading to Canada, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said
Thursday the Tories want to make Canada less welcoming for future shipments of human cargo.

Comment: Work on this issue stems from the situation involving the MV Sun Sea and nearly 500 Tamil refugees
(see article above).
