Prompt: ​So far in ​Persepolis​, we have seen how Marjane, her family, and the people of Iran
have been affected by the Iranian Cultural Revolution, the Iraqi invasion of Iran, and other social
influences and experiences. In the text, how do social influences and experiences shape the
protagonist's attitude towards herself? (Type your response in the space below).

In ​Persepolis​, we can see that the Iranian Cultural Revolution has changed her attitude to more
negative and as a whole she has matured much more verses than her character in the beginning in
the book. We can see this in the passage where she learns about her grandpa’s experiences being
tortured by the government. “​That night I stayed a very long time in the bath. I wanted to know
what it felt like to be in a cell filled with water.​ ” Satrapi, pg. 25.This shows that she was trying
to find sympathy for her grandpa’s situation after hearing what happened to him, which is one
way she shows maturity. Another part of the text that changes her attitude is when she finds out
about her maid’s forbidden love, as seen in this quote…”​But is it her fault for that she was born
where she was born??? Dad, are you for or against social classes?” ​Satrapi, pg 37. We can also
see empathy in our main character for her maid, and later in the story they decide to protest,
showing maturity that wasn’t there before. To sum it up, the Iranian Cultural Revolution has
made our character more aware of what was happening in the lives of her peers around her, and
for that matter she’s becoming a more mature young woman.
