Kailash Vision:
An Inspiration for Bridging The Gap Between Science and Spirituality*

Subhash Sharma
Dean, Indian Business Academy
Bangalore and Greater Noida

My recent visit to Kailash-Mansarovar (from August 27 to Sept 8, 2009) in Tibet provided a new inspiration for
bridging the gap between science and spirituality. It led to refinements in my ideas that have been brewing in my
mind over the years. The discussion below extends some of my earlier ideas and also includes some fresh insights
generated during this visit.

Mt Kailash has miraculous healing power because of the ‘scattering of light’ as the sun rays fall on the snow clad
mountain. These rays create natural healing radiations. When people experience these ‘divine vibrations’ they feel
rejuvenated and inspired. Perhaps such healing effect is not felt to the same level in other mountain ranges. This may
be due to unique positioning of Mt Kailash. Such natural healing properties lead to ‘radiation therapy’ and thereby
miraculous impact on people. This strengthens the faith in divine power of Mt Kailash – The Kingdom of Shiva.

I have divided my insights in the following eleven subheadings with a view to generate discussion and dialogue
around these ideas:

A View of Mt. Kailash

The idea of Non-Dual Absolute (NDA)

Kailash Vision led me to the refinement of the idea of Non-Dual Absolute (NDA). Shiva is simply an expression of
the Non-Dual Absolute. There is no temple at Kailash and Mansarovar reinforcing the non-dual aspect of Shiva.

In my earlier article (2005) on Space Time Consciousness: Towards Speculative Convergence of Science and
Spirituality through Unfolding of Universal Spiritual Consciousness (USC), I had defined this unfolding in terms of
STEM (Space, Time, Energy, Matter). Kailash Vision resulted in extension of this idea in the following three
fundamental concepts:

i. STC: Space, Time, Consciousness

ii. EMC: Energy, Mass, Consciousness

iii. Combination of i and ii in terms of STEMC (Space, Time, Energy, Mass, Consciousness)

Non-Dual Absolute (NDA) unfolds itself in terms of above three principles viz. principle of STC, principle of EMC
and principle of STEMC. The third principle indicates that this world is a manifestation of five basic ‘elements’ viz.
Space, Time, Energy, Matter and Consciousness. In the beginning these elements were coiled up in a ‘Shunya’ and
with the ‘Big Bang’ they separated from each other and acquired independent structure. Thus, there was ‘Creation
from Shunya’.

It may be interesting to see Einstein’s e = mc2 as a special case of EMC relationship wherein C turns out to be speed
of light ( c ). In my book, Quantum Rope (1999), I had suggested the general equation of relationship between
Energy, Mass and Consciousness as e = m cⁿ, wherein n could be 1, 2, 3, …n (nirvana level of consciousness).

There is a well known phrase, ‘In Every Kankar (Pebble), there is Shankar (Energy)’. During this visit, I realized
that ‘At Kailash, every Kankar is Shankar’ - All pebbles are Shiva or a form of Shiva, the Non-Dual Absolute. As
all pebbles at Mt Kailash are Shiva, people collect pebbles form there and take them to their homes to worship.

This led me to a new three levels of relationships between Shiva-Shankar and Kankar arising from popular phrases
viz. Shiva-Shankar and Shankar-Kankar. Shiva becomes Shankar and Shankar becomes Kankar. Universal Spiritual
Consciousness (USC) becomes Shankar (energy) and Kankar (mass). Same divinity pervades the material universe.
In essence, Non-Dual Absolute takes various forms. This is in consonance with famous quote from Isavasyopnishad,
Isavasyamidam sarvam yatkinca jagatyam jagat … (This world is infused with Isha-consciousness …).

The phrase, Shiva-Shankar-Kankar reveals to us three levels of reality in terms of CEM i.e. Consciousness ( C ),
Energy (E) and Mass (M). Shivcon (Shiva-consciousness) in its Non-Dual Absolute (NDA) forms reveals itself in
the material form in terms of Energy and Mass.

An answer to Kaun-tvam (Who are you?) comes from the concept of Shiv-con (Shiva consciousness): Shivoaham-
.Shivoaham – I am Shiva Consciousness, I am Shiva consciousness, echoed Shankara. It implies I am Non-Dual
Absolute (NDA) who finds existential meaning in this world in terms of CEM (Consciousness, Energy and Mass).

Yamdwar as ‘BABA’ (Born Again Born Again) Dwar

At Yamdwar, as people enter and exit, they get BABA (Born Again Born Again) experience leading to a new
transformation. Hence, they conquer fear of death.

This led me to a new approach to understand expressions of Universal Spiritual Consciousness (USC) in the
unfolding of human history through BABA theory. Universal Spiritual Consciousness (USC) unfolds itself in human
Southern Economist, Nov. 1, 2009

forms in different space and times in different regions of the world to guide and help human beings and their society.
Just like Avatara theory, BABA theory/ model of spiritual history of the world can provide us some new insights
through an ‘integrative imagination’ and re-visioning. This idea suggests that Universal Spiritual Consciousness/
Universal Shiva Consciousness (USC) expresses itself in human history in many forms such as Mahavira, Buddha,
Jesus, Shankara, Nanak, Sai Baba, Bahai Baba, Gandhi etc. These enlightened souls provided many spiritual
lessons to human beings for their spiritual development. As I looked at the sky above Mt Kailash, vision of future
form of USC in the form of ‘Sky Consciousness’ emerged. In future, this consciousness would take BABA form to
bring cosmic consciousness in the day to day life of human beings to guide them towards their future spiritual
evolution. This potentiality would be available to every human being on earth immaterial of caste, class, sect,
religion, ideological orientation, region, nation etc .

The following lines echoed during this envisioning:

People of all religions,

People of all faiths, Listen, listen
A new consciousness is arriving,

People of all books,

People of all nations, Listen, listen
A new consciousness is arriving,

People of all ideologies,

People of all isms, Listen, listen
A new consciousness is arriving,

People of all castes,

People of all classes, Listen, listen
A new consciousness is coming,
To unite all and to integrate all.

Indeed, Yamdwar offers human beings a new potentiality to realize their BABA nature to be born again to do good
to the society and thereby bring new consciousness into play in all human endeavors. Thus, Yamdwar becomes a
metaphor for BABA dwar.

Who is an Atheist? Why Scientists are Atheist?

At ‘Astapadi’, meaning of Atheism started making a new sense. Both Jainism and Buddhism don’t accept the idea
of God. But they both accept the idea of Non-Dual Absolute (NDA). In essence they reject the idea of ‘Dualistic
God’ (DG): A God sitting in Heavens and rewarding the believers and punishing the non-believers.

An atheist also rejects the concept of ‘Dualistic God’ (DG) and ‘Dualistic Absolute’ (DA). Scientists are atheists as
they don’t believe in the idea of ‘Monotheistic Dualistic God’ distributing favors to believers. However, they don’t
reject the idea of ‘consciousness’ or Non-Dual Absolute. In their view, consciousness arises from ‘natural
interactions’ between various types of matter. It is a result of ‘material interactions’ arising out of ‘natural
interactions’. However, another view favors existence of consciousness independent of material interactions. In this
view, in STC, EMC and STEMC, Consciousness ( C ) is embedded with Space, Time, Energy and Mass. C is also
the Non-Dual Absolute (NDA). We may call it ‘Shiva’ or by any other name.

In Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram (Truth, Consciousness and Beauty), ‘Shivam’ represents the Universal Spiritual
Consciousness (USC) that manifests itself as Truth and Beauty in nature. While scientists take the matter route to
reality, spirituality takes the consciousness root to understand reality. These two routes complement each other in
understanding the complete view of reality.

It may be indicated that the struggle between Science and Religion, particularly in Western context has been in
rejecting the concept of Monotheistic Dualistic God (MDG). Rational mind can not accept the notion of Dualistic
Southern Economist, Nov. 1, 2009

God even though he may be conceptualized in monotheistic terms. Hence, scientists are atheists. Over the years
science has been successful in rejecting such a ‘monotheistic’ God. However, the idea of Non-Dual Absolute has
an appeal even for the scientists and atheists. Hence, Eastern spiritual thought has an appeal to scientists and
atheists. For example, Fritzof Capra (1976) in his famous book, Tao of Physics and other related writings has
explored linkages between science and Eastern thought/ spirituality of non-dual absolute.

‘MELT’ with the Snow

‘Melting’ with the snow came as a natural metaphor during my visit to Kailash. With snow fall and snow every
where, one felt like melting with the snow.

This led me to MELT model, that identifies four interrelated stages of self evolution viz. Music (M) stage,
Enlightenment (E) stage, Liberation (L) stage and Transcendence (T) stage.

In Music stage, one is in tune with the music of nature revealed through seven levels of consciousness viz. music of
rocks (‘earth’), music of flow (‘water’), music of ‘fire’, music of ‘air’, music of ‘sky’, music of light and music of
‘nirvana’. As I undertook the parikrama, I ‘heard’ all these seven forms of music. As a result, our mind elevates to
the subtle level of these seven forms of music and connects itself with DNA (Divine Natural Actions). This leads us
to oneness with nature and thereby prepares mind for ‘enlightenment’. In the land of Buddha, Buddha like
enlightenment comes naturally to every one because one’s mind gets naturally prepared to receive the enlightenment
arising from seven forms of nature’s music. Enlightenment takes the mind to the next stage via. Liberation. Mind
gets freedom from previous programming. Once liberated, it is ready for the next stage of evolution viz.
Transcendence stage. At this level, it is in total harmony with nature and experiences the Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram
state of consciousness. It merges into Non-Dual Absolute (NDA). In fact it itself becomes Non-Dual Absolute. This
is also the OmKara (OK) state of consciousness that we experience in merging with Non-Dual Absolute. In this
state, ‘I am OK, You are OK’ acquires a new meaning in terms of ‘I am Om Kara (OK), You are Om Kara (OK) ,
We are Om Kara (OK)’. When Om is interpreted as ‘AUM’: All Unmanifest & Manifest, it represents the Non-Dual
Absolute expressing itself in unmanifest and manifest forms through DNA (Divine Natural Actions).

Experiences of the four stages of evolution are within the realm of human possibilities. All humans can experience
these stages. This is perhaps the reason that why so many people undertake the adventurous journey to Kailash-
Mansarovar and similar sacred places in Himalayas and other Mountains, to get a feel of the four stages of mind’s
evolution. Such an experience is unique as it transports us from day to day transactional view of life to higher states
of consciousness and takes us to OK: Om Kara state of consciousness wherein we experience Satyam Shivam
Sundaram in its All Unmanifest & Manifest (AUM) form.

‘GOD’ as Great Order Disorder: GOD Darshan through Seven Laws of Nature

We can define ‘GOD’ as ‘Great Order Disorder’. At Mt Kailash, one gets the GOD Darshan in terms of this
definition of GOD. Within the same day one experiences many unpredictable weather conditions and the beauty of
nature is revealed through Great Order & Disorder. We not only live with this GOD but also feel quite comfortable.
This GOD darshan leads us to a new perspective of life leading to a better understanding of Divine Operating
System (DOS) of nature. We need to understand laws of nature in terms of Order-Disorder dynamics to appreciate
the beauty of nature and its DNA (Divine Natural Actions).

All humans efforts in history have concentrated on creating an ‘Order’. However, experience so far indicates that all
such efforts have led to Disorder. Recent examples include the authoritarian regimes that have attempted to create an
order but ended up with greater disorder. Marxism failed because it could not understand, GOD (Great Order and
Disorder) nature of nature. It tried to create an Order that led to its demise. Democracy succeeds because it has self
correcting mechanism to create order out of disorder. It understands the Order-Disorder dynamics much better
compared to authoritarian regimes, religious or secular in nature. Under ‘Order’ paradigm, ‘Disorder’ is considered
as pathological, irrational and a problem. However, those who understand the Order-Disorder dynamics take a
different view and are thereby able to provide better solutions. They do not consider disorder as problem but as an
unfolding nature of nature and order-disorder as essential aspect of nature. They consider it as part of Divine
Operating System (DOS). Hence, their approach to life is very different from those who operate on the order
paradigm but end up creating greater disorder or entropy.
Southern Economist, Nov. 1, 2009

Seven scientific laws of nature that help us in understanding Order-Disorder dynamics and thereby associated DOS
(Divine Operating System), are as follows:

Divine Operating System (DOS) Laws Knowledge roots

1. OD Cycles (Order-Disorder-New Order) Chaos theory

2. Action-Reaction Physics

3. Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis Philosophy

4. Centripetal-Centrifugal Forces Physics

5. Fission-Fusion Physics

6. Differentiation & Integration Mathematics/ Systems theory

7. Chance and Choice Philosophy/ Biology /Psychology

Once we understand these seven laws as part of Divine Operating System (DOS), we get a better understanding of
the GOD (Great Order and Disorder). Kailash Darshan leads us towards this understanding as Shiva himself is
GOD: Great Order and Disorder, of this world. These scientific laws help us in a better understanding of Order-
Disorder dynamics within social, organization, national and world context.

God, Karma, Chance and Choice

Question of destiny and free will has occupied the attention of human thought over centuries. In this respect the
following three thoughts have influenced the human beings:

i. God: God plays the major role in human destiny. A ‘monotheistic dualistic God’ has been conceptualized and
human life is predetermined by such a God. In this world view, ‘external agency’ in the form of God is a major
determinant of success and failures. There is no free-will in such a conceptualization of human conditions. God is
the only explanation.

ii. Karma: Karma theory suggests that Karmas performed by an individual play an important role in shaping one’s
destiny. Impact of past Karmas is overpowering, however, human beings can change their future through positive
Karmas. Thus, this approach shifts the responsibility to an ‘internal agency’. This is the fundamental difference
between the two approaches.

iii. Chance and Choice: This is scientific approach. Nature offers to human beings both chance and choice.
Depending upon how human beings make best out of such chances and choices, they achieve ‘success’. There is no
role of an ‘external agency’ such as God in chance and choice offered by nature.

Depending upon their faith in above three streams of thinking, there are three types of human beings. People who
believe in determinism, people who believe destiny can be changed through Karmas and people who believe in
chance and choice nature of nature. Human society is increasingly realizing the increasing impact of the second and
third approaches on human consciousness and thereby its impact on society. GOD in his Great Order and Disorder
form offers many chances and choices to human beings to improve their choices through free will. Perhaps all the
three explanations viz. God, Karma, Chance & Choice have some impact on human beings with varying intensities.
This is creating a fourth category of human beings who believe in a mixed impact of God, Karma and Chance &
Choice. They are more inclined towards the free will approach based on Karma/ Internal agency, coupled with
chance and choice.

From Newton to Nirvana

At Astapadi, a thought came to my mind: If Newton after sitting under the apple tree had undertaken a journey to Mt
Kailash, he would have given us three laws of Nirvana. However, Newton was not lucky to experience the steps of
Astapadi. Hence the wisdom of Nirvana came from the East from Thirthankars and Buddha. While science gave us
laws to understand the ‘material’ universe, spirituality gave us insights about ‘laws of nirvana’. As we ascend the
‘astapadi’, we realize the need to bridge the gap between Newton and Nirvana.

From Darwin to Divinity

At Astapadi another thought came to my mind: If Darwin had undertaken a journey to Mt Kailash, he would have
not propagated the idea of ‘survival of the fittest to eliminate the rest’. Instead of highlighting the violent side of
nature, he would have appreciated the silent side (divine side) also. Many Western scientists were simply not lucky
enough to see the divinity of Himalayas, hence, their world view was restricted to the ‘material’ side of nature.

In social context, journey from Darwin to Divinity is via Dharma and Dignity. In today’s world dominated by
Darwinian thinking where every one is busy eliminating the other, there is a need to restore a new social order based
on ‘Dharma’ and Dignity and then move towards Divinity.

Even ‘religions’ have become Darwinian in their practices. They want to eliminate each other in the name of their
‘God’. Nation-States are Darwinian. They want to eliminate each other in the name of their ‘nations’. In fact the idea
of Nations-State is rooted in the ‘spirit of expansionism and aggression’, that it took over from ‘religions’. The
same spirit continues in case of Corporate world. Corporations are also Darwinian. They want to eliminate each
other. Thus, human beings and their social institutions are interested in inflicting maximum damage on other. We
realize the limitations of such an approach, as we ascend the Mt Kailash and realize that there is HOPE (Higher
Order Purpose of Existence) for humanity. This implies a mind set shift from Darwin to Divinity – From ‘science’
of violence to ‘art’ and wisdom of non-violence. Wisdom of non-violence leads us towards Divine Spiritual
Synergy (DSS) that emanates from Mt. Kailash and other such sacred places. Like in the past, future arrival of
Universal Spiritual Consciousness (USC) would lead us towards Higher Order Purpose of Existence (HOPE).

I am A New Religion

Insight into Non-Dual Absolute (NDA) and the idea of ‘Darwin to Divinity’ led me to another insight viz. I Am A
New Religion. The following lines flowed through the mind naturally:

I am a new religion, Higher than every religion,

A religion of Being, Being a Human Being,
Being a Higher Being,

I am a new nation, Higher than every nation,

A nation of Being, Being a Human Being,
Being a Higher Being,

I am a new ism, Higher than every ism,

An ism of Being, Being a Human Being,
Being a Higher Being,

I am a new identity, Higher than every identity,

An identity of Being, Being a Human Being,
Being a Higher Being,

I am a new brand, Higher than every brand,

A brand of Being, Being a Human Being,
Being a Higher Being,
Southern Economist, Nov. 1, 2009

I am a new force, Higher than every force,

A force of Being, Being a Human Being,
Being a Higher Being,

From Horse Power (HP) to Hanuman Power (HP)

The strong will power was evident among many aged people who took the parikrama of Mt Kailash. Will power can
do wonders. It is at the foundation of leadership. While Horse Power (HP) is indicative of physical power, will
power is indicative of spiritual power.

There are three types of ‘quantum jumps’ viz. physical jump, mind jump and spiritual jump. Physical jump has its
limitations e.g. long jump has a limit. Human beings are not Kangaroos. Nature has put certain physical limitations.
However, Kangaroos do not have the same level of intelligence as human beings. Hence, human beings can take
mind jumps e.g Superman jumps. Spiritual jumps can take as far beyond the mind jumps. They reflect the will
power of individuals. ‘Hanuman jump’ is an illustration of spiritual jump. There are many who realize their full
potential through Hanuman jump. Horse Power (HP) to Hanuman Power (HP) represents the full potentiality of
human beings. As people take Kailash parikrama, they learn the lessons of three quantum jumps through ‘step by
step’ approach and feel energized and rejuvenated.

Towards Sacro-civic and Sacro-spiritual society

On the basis of my visit to Orchha, a town of historical importance near Jhansi that is also my home town, I had
presented Orchha Vision as an inspiration for sacro-civic society. Orchha is well known for an inspirational phrase,
‘Ram Raja ki Sarkar’- A metaphor for Divine-Democratic form of leadership. My article on Orchha Vision was
published on Aug 15, 2009 in Southern Economist, Bangalore. This vision extended Gandhi’s vision of ‘Ram-rajya’
in terms of a new vision of ‘sacro-civic’ society.

Kailash visit provided me another vision viz. Kailash Vision in the form of ‘sacro-spiritual’ (Divinity driven)
perspective of life and nature. This perspective is often presented in a popular phrase - Satyam Shivam Sundram
(Truth Consciousness Beauty). Shivam or Consciousness in its sacro-spiritual form expresses itself in the form of
beauty and truth and this is reflected in an ‘eco-sattavik’ view of life. In such a view, ecological and sattavik
(sublime) aspects of nature are highlighted and they constitute the guiding principle for all human endeavors. With
the challenge of climatic change, such a world view is the need of the hour.

Combination of the Orchha Vision and Kailash Vision led me to OK (Orchha-Kailash) vision of society in terms of
sacro-civic and sacro-spiritual society. Can ‘Kingdom of Shiva’ be brought down from Kailash and Himalayas in to
our day to day existence to make everything harmonic? This is the essence of the OK Vision originating from my
Orchha and Kailash visits. This new vision for human society implies that today’s Darwinian society should evolve
into sacro-civic and sacro-spiritual levels. Though metaphors of Orchha and Mt Kailash have provided the
foundation for this vision, it is indeed universal and futuristic in nature and has global relevance.

The above presented eleven insights originating from visit to Kailash-Mansarovar, could further evolve into eleven
chapters of a future monograph/ book on bridging the gap between science and spirituality. Readers of this article
are invited to contribute to extension of these ideas.
