CVL905: BRIDGE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
ASSIGNMENT NO. 4
Fall 2018
Assignment due date: During the TUTORIAL of the week of November 26, 2018

Question 1:

For the shown 30-m span composite concrete deck-on-steel I-girder bridge located in Montreal, Canada,
and based on CHBDC 2014, you are required to perform the following:

i) Check the adequacy of the exterior composite girder at FLS for Flexure.
ii) Check the adequacy of interior composite section for shear at ULS if no intermediate
transverse stiffeners are required but there are vertical bearing stiffeners at the supports.
iii) Check the adequacy of interior composite section for shear at ULS if intermediate
transverse stiffeners are located every 2.5 m and there are vertical bearing stiffeners at the
supports.
iv) Check the adequacy of shear connectors at ULS, considering shear studs of 22 mm
diameter, over 2 lines, with 250 mm longitudinal spacing.
v) Check the adequacy of shear connectors at FLS, considering shear studs of 22 mm
diameter, over 2 lines, with 250 mm longitudinal spacing.

Given:
28-day concrete strength = 35 MPa
Thickness of Ashplat Layer = 90 mm
Steel girder: W1100x343, Made of 350W steel
Cross bracing spacing = 6.0 m
Two rows of 15M bars spaced at 300 mm are placed at top and the bottom of the concrete deck (Cover
=50 mm)
Assume any missing data.
