In Reported speech the question becomes a
statement. Present
Past Perfect
Perfect
The word ask in introductory sentences in
Reported Questions can be substituted with Past Perfect
other words, e.g. want to know/ wonder

 If there is a question without a
question word, Progressive forms
use whether or if in Reported
Speech. am/are/is was/were

Peter: “Do you play football?” → Peter was/were


asked me whether (if) I played football.
has been had been
 If there is a question with a
had been
question word in Direct Speech,
use this question word in
Reported Speech.

Peter: “When do you play football?” →


Peter asked me when I played football.

IMPORTANT: The tense of the verb


changes as it does in reported speech
but we don’t use auxiliary verbs. The word
order is the same as in an affirmative
sentence.
